Brits Are Best

Things that are British and therefore (and for other reasons, too) awesome:
1. HARRY POTTER.
2. Doctor Who (I don't watch the show, but I know my friends Lola and Michelle will kill me if I don't include it on this list)
3. The drama teacher at my old school, Joanne.
4. Charlie McDonnell (I just found out about him tonight and he's incredible, if you don't know who he is, you need to watch his videos. I'm not a usual Youtuber, but he's an exception)
5. The Arctic Monkeys
6. Emma Watson
7. Alexa Chung

I love Alexa Chung. I actually modeled my haircut after her hair.
Here are some in-spy-ray-shun-all (inspirational, for those of you who didn't get that) photos:

(All photos via various sources, mostly Harper's Bazaar. If you know where a picture's from, let me know and I'll cite it)

How cute is she???? Pretty kyoot.

If anyone can rock a Chanel bag, it's her. See pictures 2, 3, and 4. The first picture is very Band of Outsiders Spring/Summer 2012, which I love.

I'll get back to a regular posting soon. Jew holidays are quite time consuming. Eating challah takes a lot of energy.

I'm working on a post about a legit topic, written especially because now I write for the Huffington Post. It shall premiere on Tuesday, October 4th, maybe, or before. Haven't quite decided.

You're NOT A Tulle: How To Un-Toolify Yourself

Definition of a "tool" from urbandictionary.com:

"A person, typically male, who says or does things that cause you to give them a 'what-are-you-even-doing-here' look. The 'what-are-you-even-doing-here' look is classified by a glare in the tool's direction and is usually accompanied by muttering of how big of a tool they are. The tool is usually someone who is unwelcome but no one has the balls to tell them to get lost. The tool is always making comments that are out-of-place, out-of-line or just plain stupid. The tool is always trying too hard to fit in, and because of this, never will. However, the tool is useful because you can use them for things; money, rides, etc."

A few things to note here:
1. Not all tools are male. Typically, yes, but even toolishness is not sexist.
2. "The tool is always trying too hard to fit in, and because of this, never will." This one is the most important of all the above phrases. This is exactly what I base my personal philosophy off of. I refuse to conform if it doesn't feel right. I never jumped on the short, tight, black skirt trend that everyone else my age did, nor did I ever jump on the crop top bandwagon, because they weren't me. I wear things that suit my taste, and the most important thing is that I'm not uncomfortable, ever. I think that's the most important thing for everyone when they're dressing themselves: if they're uncomfortable then they're not confident, and in the words of street style photographer beast, Mr. Newton, "The glue that pulls together an outfit is often just confidence and attitude."

Definition of "tulle" from dictionary.com:
a thin, fine, machine-made net of acetate, nylon, rayon, or silk.

Not to be confused with the above "tool."

This post is somewhat of a photo tutorial on how to take those pieces in your closet/drawers that you feel like you're never going to wear because they're just not you, but you feel like you might eventually, so you hold on to them season after season and have yet to wear them, and turn them into completely wearable pieces. Obviously I can't do this for each of you, but I can show you how I did it for myself.

All photos taken by my sister Rachel and edited by me. I actually edited them for real, but Blogger is screwing them up and making them look grey again after I fixed that. I hope when it posts it's okay, but right now I'm not too pleased with Blogger. I used Photoshop and everything!

Step 1: Throw on that thing that you feel like you're never going to wear because it's just not you, but you feel like you might eventually, so you hold on to it season after season and have yet to wear it. I chose this Forever 21 dress that I got from my cousin a few years ago. I have not worn it once. I also put on my comfylicious black tights, 'cause baby, it's c...kinda chilly in my science class.

Step 2: Throw something that you do like on to cover it up/make it more you. I chose my silk chambray Liz Claiborne top and tied it around my waist to hide the fact that this dress is honestly quite tight. Not something I usually dig. If this top looks familiar, it's because I wore it here and here, and a billion more times that you have not seen.

Step 3: Layer. Layer more. Layer again. If there's one thing I've learned from the Man Repeller, it's to layer dat shiz on like there's no tomorrow. Once I'd completed steps 1 and 2 this morning, I knew there was something missing, but I couldn't figure out what. Then I thought about how cold it is during science class, and then it hit me: I needed to layer! It's fall for goodness' sake (finally), even thought it doesn't feel like it, so I can layer whatever the hell I want on my body if I feel so inclined. As you can see, I threw on a Forever 21 cardigan I got last winter (there is an abnormal amount of F21 going on today...funny how they're all included in a post about a thing I don't often wear.)

Step 4: Accessorize. There was something really serious missing from step 3. One of them was shoes. Can't go to school without shoes, now can I? I could, but my toes would get crumpled and trampled. And why not wear leopard print Converse if you've got 'em? If you've got it, flaunt it, as they say. So that's what I did. I wore my leopard print Chuck Taylors and stuck one of my three new Missoni For Target headbands on, which you can see below:

Missoni For Target headband, worn just for kicks.

And there ya go! I completely avoided being a tool and wearing something that was not me by just adding a few things here and there. If you've got any questions about this tutorial, let me know at youreatulle@gmail.com.

Let me know in the comments if you liked this, I'll do more if you did.

P.S.: Yes, I did get a haircut. A trim. A trimmy jimmy if you will.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Enjoy your honey-dipped apples and chocolate babka while it lasts, guys.

Bad Blogger! Sit! Stay! BLOG!

Who is "Bad Blogger," might you ask? That would be me. I haven't been on top of things lately. I'm still adjusting to my new school, and it's a bit crazy. I have legitimate classes and I have to make friends and such. What a hassle. Thank the lordy lord lord that today was only a three-day school week. I would have crumbled to pieces and been taken by the wind, the way (SPOILER ALERT) He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named did at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

On the down side, I don't have anything really worthwhile to share with you tonight.

On the up side, there's a few things:
1. I am going to a wedding this weekend (my first wedding ever, OMGooseness how exciting), which means I get to wear fancy clothes, which means you get to see them, right here, in a few days.

2. I've been workin' on some sketches, all the live long day! (Sing to the tune of "I've Been Working On the Railroad") Just kidding, just during my free period this morning.

3. I'm working on trying to promote this blog more, so I'm going to try to post more on Chictopia, Lookbook, Twitter and Facebook. The key word here is try.

Hope y'all are enjoying your week and possibly mentally preparing for the new year: 3 hour synagogue services and apples dipped in honey? Consider me...on the fence.

Emma³

Emma³=Emma x Emma x Emma If we're being technical, it should be 3Emma, but Emma³ is twenty billion times cooler.

I know I haven't been on top of my blogging game lately, but in my defense, I was plagued with a head cold this weekend and had to do something called "sleep" (? I was unfamiliar as well). I wasn't very good at it. Perhaps it is something where practice makes perfect?

But to make up for my baby hiatus, I have decided to tell you all about the three Emmas that are not only style icons, but are highly inspirational (Emma Watson especially. I am basically in love with her. It's partly to do with the fact that she is Hermione Granger, but she's also a wonderful and spectacular person. Sigh.): Emma Watson, Emma Stone, and Emma Roberts.

All three of the women are young actresses that started off small and have worked their way up to bigger and better things. Over the years, their styles have developed as well, and I'm here to open your eyes to the world of Emmas.

Emma #1: Roberts
To be honest, I don't know much about Emma Roberts, except for the fact that I watched "Unfabulous" religiously as a child. DAY AFTER DAY IT'S UNFABULOUS AND EVERYONE AROUND ME IS UNBEARABLE!

Most people know her from "Unfabulous" or because she's Julia Roberts' niece, but it looks like little Miss Roberts is making a name for herself in the real world. She has graduated from Teen Nick Academy for Bad Acting (TNABA)and now attends the Real World Institute for Talented People (RWITP). Speaking of legit things, she was recently put on Derek Blasberg's list of young rising stars, alongside Zooey Deschanel, Dakota Fanning, Amanda Seyfried and Lea Michele. That's a pretty hot list Derek's got goin' on there, wouldn'tcha say?

I haven't seen Emma in any movies lately, but I've been seeing more and more of her in Harper's Bazaar, so maybe that's a sign telling me to jump on the bandwagon. This girl's making her comeback, and this time she's doing it fabulously. (Pun pun pun pun pun pun pun, Nickelodeon!

like some good ol' Chanel Haute Couture
Emma #2: Stone
The world first saw Emma Stone in "Superbad" and loved her, then in "House Bunny," and then her career took off like a sparrow in November. Meaning fast. "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" came next, then "Zombieland" and the one that made Emma Stone a household name: "Easy A." After that movie, she took about a million jobs and came out with "Crazy, Stupid, Love" and "The Help" all at once. The next big one is "The Amazing Spider-Man." Let us note that all of her roles in these movies were leads.

So she's basically one of the beastest women on earth right now. And she's like 22, so she has the whole rest of her life to become a legend.

She's been a blonde, a brunette and a redhead, and looks gorgeous as all three. I don't know anyone like that.

Her style is classic and beautiful, and wears Clavin Klein, Chanel and Christopher Kane. Check dis chick out.

Now that's the Emma I know--a laughing redhead. Like me.

Emma #3: Watson
Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson is secretly a Parisian. Which makes her approximately 83.7 percent classier. The fact that she plays Hermione Granger in all eight Harry Potter movies makes her 104.6 percent cooler. The fact that she is British makes her 74 percent more awesome. The fact that she is playing Sam in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, aka one of my favorite books of all time, makes her 69.2 percent better than everyone else. Her intelligence, talent and beauty add another 256 percent onto that, which leaves us with 587.5 percent Emma Watson.

I'm kind of in love with her, which I mentioned before. Just thought I'd say it again. One of my many lifetime goals is to write her biography. Now that is something worth checking off your bucket list.

Let me tell you a short story. One day, about four years ago, I was walking around Manhattan with my mom and sister, and this teenager/woman comes walking at a brisk pace right by me, and it took me about 20 seconds to process that I was pretty sure that Emma Watson had just walked right by me. It's not confirmed, but it still gives me the heebie jeebies when I think about it.

If you didn't manage to pick up any of the magazines she was featured in this summer, such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar UK, then you can read the articles here: read the full article from Vogue and small excerpts from Harper's Bazaar UK's feature on her.

If you don't see what's so incredible about her, then I don't know what to do to convince you. She was born this way. And she was born to run. From dementors and Death Eaters, that is.

Oh right--the fashion part. She looked adorable at age 12 and stunning at 21, with her Hermione hair and her pixie cut. Her current hairstyle kind of makes her look like Twiggy sometimes; there's a picture below. She's also flat out beautiful. Just look:

She knows how to dress herself in a very unique way; never subdued, but not Lady Gaga-ish either. WHY CAN'T I BE HER, PLEASE EXPLAIN. But seriously, I don't understand the science of it. Anyone wanna help a brotha out?

Emma in Burberry. See what I mean? She's like a good party: not quiet but not too loud. In my opinion.
Emma at the MTV Movie Awards, gorgeous as ever.

In an editorial that I can't seem to pinpoint. Bein' cute, wearing a literally handmade monocle.
I hope you have gathered as much inspiration from these infinitely inspirational women as you possibly can. But hurry, before everyone else snatches it up! JK, that's physically impossible. We all know how much I love making jokes about illogical things just for kix.

In other news...
Wait, that was a totally unintentional but totally perfect transition into what I'm about to say. I now write for the Huffington Post. They were looking for high school bloggers to write for them, so I submitted my work. I now send them blogposts as often as twice a week and they publish it on their site. I'm not sure how I was chosen or who else is doing it, but I'll let you know as soon as I get my grubby little fingers on that info. I'm lying, my fingers are not grubby. They just have blue pen on them because I like to draw smiley faces out of my hand freckles.

Also, the beginnings of my Missoni For Target purchases have arrived! I wore one of the headbands today. I felt very Italian. I think there was even pizza for lunch today at school.

The winner of my shorts giveaway was Daxia from Silk and Satan.

I won't be covering spring clothing and beauty trends until after Paris Fashion Week. Same with street style. If you recall, street style is the first thing I wrote about on this blog. Memories...

I feel like I'm forgetting something, but I hope I'm not.

Oh, but I am.

Last night I saw Newsies!, an off-Broadway show about 1899 newsboys. It was really good, and my mom's student was in it. Plus the lead had some serious pipes. I'm talking Aladdin-style. Since it was out in Jerz-ay, I got home at 12 am and had to get up at 6 am for school. And I had a science test today. I love how these things play out so nicely.

Enjoy your three day school week, I know I am.

P.S. I Made This

That happens to be a book, but that's sort of how I said goodbye to my friends the other day. When I was about to leave, I was like, "Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you, I made this shirt." Everyone was like, "Wait you're lying. You did not!! Jesus Christ!" It was pre-tty exciting stuff, I must say. When I got home, I tried to take pictures as best I could, but I was home alone and I don't have a tripod or a remote control. I had to use a standing shelf thing and the self-timer. Not the best pictures ever, I know. I just wanted to show you all some of my sewing skillz.

Just so you know, I didn't make the pattern for the shirt. My sewing teacher from this summer at FIT gave us the pattern, but I don't even know if she made it. I did modify it though, and I chose the fabric. And of course, I sewed it.

Another just-so-you-know moment: I'm going to try and get more designing/sewing going on in this club. It's pretty difficult, since I've barely had time to blog properly, but I am tryin' here!!

 Top: me!
Pants: Forever 21
Denim Jacket: Gap via Angel Street Thrift Shop
Belt: Urban Outfitters
Shoes: Urban Outfitters
Watch: gift

This is my awkz face. WAZZUP GUYZZZZ!!!

This is not the best picture of the shirt because the fit looks wacky (way tighter than it really is--it's more of a boxy shape in reality), but I just wanted to show you it.

*BREAKING NEWS!!!*
I wrote this while watching Project Runway, and just as Viktor's look comes out, I notice that his shirt is made WITH THE SAME PRINT. COME AT ME!!! I literally had a mini flip out sesh there. And guess what? HE WON THE CHALLENGE! Winning print, eh? Eh?

It was also featured in Marie Claire and Rolling Stone. I can't handle this.

*ANOTHER BREAKING NEWS*
1. Bad grammar is my thing (see above)
2. Olivier's losing featured a print that I was this close to buying, but didn't. I guess there's a reason why.

That's all for today--keep in mind that I wanted to post this last night, but I needed to wait until today to get the picture for you of Viktor and Olivier's looks. It was worth it, no? Still freakin' out here.

NaïS

At IFB Con I met a woman named Anaïs, and I talked to her initially because I loved her outfit. Then I found out that she's a French lingerie designer. She has a brand called NaïS, and it's awesome. I'm not into the whole Victoria's Secret bombshell thing, so that's why I asked Anaïs if I could feature her on my blog. I conducted an interview with her that you can read below. Also be sure to check out her website

Here's a few tidbitties of information about the brand:

NaïS is a new concept of Urban-crafted lingerie and loungewear. This is a designer brand with a positive spirit that takes its inspiration into the urban culture, street art and retro vibes.
It is a comfortable and easy-to-wear line of crafted items made locally for a daily and sustainable usage.
We are making fresh collections with new type of shapes, off-beat colors and smooth fabrics.
We created NaïS to prove that lingerie can be a part of fashion, and that you can be trendy when it comes to your underwear.
We believe that American women are looking for designer collections that focus on the comfortable garments that they can wear every day.
And most importantly, we want to bring some fun into everyday life!

And now for the interview:

Odelia: Where do you live? (the city and/or country is sufficient)

Anaïs: I live in Brooklyn, Bushwick exactly. That's not the most beautiful neighborhood in NYC, but let say that's interesting... I am from France originally.

O: What is your profession?

A: I am a fashion designer. I am running my own brand, NaïS, with my business partner. The launch of the brand is planned for January 2012. Exciting!

O: When did you start designing?

When I started drawing! I filled pages and pages of princesses dress... More seriously, I went to ESMOD in Paris to study fashion design and pattern making, but before, when I was in middle school/high school, I was customizing a lot of clothes. I don't remember dreaming about another type of job.

O: Have you always designed lingerie, or have you explored other types of apparel as well?

A: During my studies, I learned how to design fashion in general, more focus on women's though. I did a bunch of different internships, from couture to accessories. But it's been around 4 years that I am in the lingerie business.

O: Where do you find inspiration? What and/or who inspires you?

A: I am really curious, so I always find new magazines, communities, events. I love to mix different cultures. All of my friends are totally different from each other, and it is stimulating. I don't like to be part of one community, I like to be part of thousands. I will always be a big fan of Christian Lacroix's collections, that was just the most amazing haute couture for me. I definitely consider the "Belle epoque" as the most inspiring one. Favorite artists are Mucha, Klimt, Andy Warhol, Basquiat... For an Icon, I would say Joséphine Baker. And I like to follow the street art, urban culture in general. And I almost forgot, I buy hundreds of vintage laces every year.

O: What are your favorite songs or musical artists at the moment?

A: Right now I have this 90' hiphop period that I listen a lot, J Dilla, Kaze, Snoop Dog... I love "the uncomfortable truth" Nneka, "the faith of a child" Lenny Kravitz, "raggamuffin" Selah Sue, "Otis" Kanye West and Jay-Z, I can go like that all day! As far as new talents, I would say Laetitia Dana who is amazing in concert, and Moon Hooch that I discovered when I arrived in New York.

O: Would you say that the design process is difficult, or does it come naturally to you?

A: It is not a regular flow of design inspirations. I have weeks full of ideas, that I don't need for the moment. And sometimes when I need it, the inspiration is not here. But anyway, I always keep a stock of ideas in a corner of my brain. But what I absolutely need to design good products is to brainstorm with others.

O: If you weren't a designer, what would you like to be?

A: Wow, that's a tough one...I've never thought about that... I am sure that anyway I would be frustrated!!!

O: Do you have any advice for young (and even not so young) people who wish to have a career in the fashion industry, especially as designers?

A: Never think that designer is an easy job. You definitely have to learn and be good at the technical part. When you design something you have to know how to make it from a blank paper to the final prototype. And I think that being a good designer is to be able to adapt your work to every different brands and at the same time to keep your own style.

O: Who are your favorite designers?

A: Christian Lacroix = God
On another level, I think Jean-Paul Gaultier has an unlimited creativity. Madame Grès showed to Fashion how a brand can be timeless. Matthew Williamson, Ricardo Tisci, Sarah Burton are the ones who pop-up.

O: Where do you buy your clothing?

A: Honestly, I am really average for that. Mango, Zara mostly, Aritzia and Urban outfitters sometimes. Osmose, Cosmo, André for shoes. Thrift stores when I have time.

O: What are your 3 favorite pieces of clothing from your wardrobe right now?

A: High rise mini skirt with a Native pattern from Rojas, Huge necklace with wood and transparent beads from Aldo, my African wax headband (from myself, lol).

O: Are there any trends you're looking forward to trying out this season? If so, which one(s)?

A: I love this white/beige winter trend, I think it is definitely classy and feminine. Houndstooth are back, and I am so glad, that's my favorite pattern for the winter.
I think I'm in the preppy/ethnic spirit right now (a little bit of 70's inspiration).

O: Anything else you want to say?

Thank you for your questions!

Another Thing To Add To My To-Do Lyst

No that is not a typo, it's a pun. And you know how I like puns. You know who else likes puns? Rick. Rick loves puns. Don't worry if you don't understand this reference. Only a selected few will.

Remember how I told you yesterday about my Lyst? Well, Hilary from lyst.com promised that I'd be on the weekly newsletter, and lo and behold, there I am:

I know it's small, but you can click on the picture to enlarge it if you want.

I tried to post the link to the weekly newsletter, but you have to be a member of lyst.com. Aww shuckz!

Sorry that this is such a short post, but I'm p (p=pretty) tired and I should go to bed. Keep in mind that it's not 9 am when I'm writing this, which is what time it was posted. I have academic responsibilities (aka skewl) to handle. Sadly, society has decided that skewl comes first (notice how I bolded the "ew" in skewl) and blogging comes second...LAME.

Night buddies! Or good morning? Good afternoon, maybe? How about hello? But I'm leaving, so I guess that's goodbye, isn't it?

The Weekend Update with Odelia Kaly

That's a play on "The Weekend Update with Seth Meyers" from Saturday Night Live. I can't tell if it's a really boring title or if it's clever.

As I hope to gooseness that you have guessed, this post is essentially a general update that I writing on the weekend. It's just a mish-mosh of info/pictures I'd like to share with y'all.

Order o' bizness #1:
Not enough people have entered my giveaway to actually carry it out, so I'm extending it until next Sunday at 12 am. Please enter, there's nothing to lose! Literally. You gain a pair of shorts, maybe, and the worst case scenario is that you don't. You can't win if you don't play, or however that saying goes. That's far too lame to be a legitimate saying.

Order o' bizness #2:
I was photographed at Lincoln Center this week by Christine Cameron from My Style Pill, and these are the photos she posted:

Top: Liz Claiborne via Squan Dry Goods
Jeans: Levi's
Socks: New York & Company
Shoes: Giorgio Brutini via Savers
Ribbon: the bag of trims I have sitting on my sewing table
Things awkwardly sticking out of my pockets: phone (left) and business cards (right)

When Christine took my picture, she said I had a "J. Crew and Anthro" (Anthro meaning Anthropologie) style. I've never thought of myself to be J. Crew or Anthropologie (well, maybe Anthro a little), so it was cool that she thought that. Based on just this outfit, I'd think that too. My brain is so overstimulated by Fashion Week and whatnot that I have no idea what my style is right now. I'm still workin' on that one.

Order o' bizness #3:
There are still many things left on my "to blog about" list, including my Project Runway recaps and spring beauty trends. I'll get around to them, but right now London Fashion Week has just begun. Shiznits.

Order o' bizness #4:
Hilary from lyst.com contacted me and told me about her website; it's similar to Fashiolista, but better. I never really got into Fashiolista, but I spent approximately an hour and a half creating my Lyst, which you can also see a preview of on the sidebar on the right, underneath "Followers." Speaking of followers...

Order o' bizness #5:
If you read this blog and enjoy it, I'd really really really really really really really really appreciate if you became a follower! I even made you a supa easy tutorial to follow if you don't know how to go about following my blog. By following, it let's me get a sense of how many people read it, which is very important so that I can think of what to write about. And it's also quite good for the self esteem, so I've heard. So if you'd be so kind...

That's all for today. See you on the flip side! As in when the sun is in the sky and the moon is underground. Because I know for a fact that's where the moon goes during the day, he invited me over once and I saw his house. It was a bit dark, but we had tea and biscuits, and it was quite lovely.

Enter my giveaway! You have a whole week starting...now!

Lookin' Good: Fashion Week Street Style

As promised, my street stylin' photogs (I vow to never say that again) taken throughout Fashion Week (starting at IFB Con and ending on Thursday, September 15th). I've chosen 14 of the 153 that I edited down and put in a Facebook album, because all 153 would've taken wayyy too long to upload to Blogger. As it is, it's already 1:30 am (how did that happen?!) and I have to get up in a few hours for schoolHAHAHAH JUST KIDDING IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT/REALLY EARLY SUNDAY MORNING.

If you are one of the wonderful (and fashionable) people that I met during Fashion Week, and I gave you my card and said you could check my blog to see your picture up here? Your picture might not be displayed physically on my blog, since there are 153 of them, but you (and everyone else) can definitely see them here.

The little captions will say where the photos were taken.
All photos by me.
