Oh Hey! Remember Me?

Oh hey everyone! It's been a while. WAY TOO LONG, to be exact. I've been dying to blog, but we went swimming every night until 11:30 in Los Angeles. I am now in Las Vegas, and have regular internet access.

I have SO MANY THINGS TO SHOW/TELL YOU (I took over 200 pictures, many of which I'm not even done editing yet), so I'll just start at the beginning. This is going to take a lot of posts to get through. Let's start with Thursday, June 23rd.

I went to bed quite late the night before and fell asleep listening to music. And woke up listening to music, at 4 a.m. We got our stuff together and took the subway to Port Authority, where we took a bus to Newark Airport. It wouldn't have been so terrible if I hadn't smuggled two hard cover Harry Potter books in my bag as well as my computer (I have a deadline, you know). Let's skip to when we're on the plane: we sat on the runway for over an hour, which totally sucks. After we finally left, the flight was around 5 hours long. I forced myself to read 120 pages of F. Scott Fitzgerald's This Side of Paradise, and ended up finishing it on the plane. I then immediately picked up Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but didn't get too far with that.

After we hopped off the plane at LAX, we went to Enterprise to get our rental car, but of course our first car was dysfunctional (the back doors didn't open) and it took us forever to drive to Burbank from LAX. When we finally reached our Marriott hotel in Burbank (also the place where the greatest television show ever, Chuck, takes place (you'll hear more about this later)), we went immediately to one of the two outdoor pool. I just napped. Typiqual. However, there was something exciting about this part: I TURBANDED!!! ...And of course didn't take any pictures. I did get better about getting pictures later on in the trip, though. I promise.

I apologize if this is terribly boring--this is partly for me, as well, because I don't want to forget this trip.

Post-pool, we ate dinner at the hotel's restaurant, where the waitress dumped Diet Coke all over my mom's boyfriend, which resulted in our meal being free. And then came the best part: my sister's show!

I don't think I've explained much why we actually went to California, so I'll do that now. My sister and her friend wrote a 30-minute play called "The Adventures of Boy and Girl: As Told By Interrupted Monologues," which is about two adults, Trish and Rick, who broke up after 4 years of dating, and they essentially tell you everything that happened between them and why the split. Not only is it hands-down the funniest play I have ever seen, it's also startling insightful and accurate to be written by 16-year-olds. They sent their script into the Blank Theater Company's Young Playwrights Competition, and it one as a finalist among 11 other plays chosen from around the country. They were all eventually put on at the Stella Adler Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. My sister's was one of the three in the last week, and they gave 4 performances, of which I saw two. There were two other plays, which I enjoyed, but I don't think that I could ever shut up if I got started. As it is I'm boring you into a stupor. I can tell.

Moving on. Quick side note: It's important, I promise. I ate breakfast at 7:30 in the airport, then a small meal on the plane at around 11 (both Eastern Time), then a granola bar at around 3:30, then dinner at 6:30 (both Pacific Time). Back to the story. After the play, we went to a place around the corner from the theatre called Mel's Drive-In, which wasn't actually a drive-in. It was a diner. It was about 2 am Eastern Time, and I got a vanilla milkshake. That was the first time I had had a milkshake at 2 in the morning. It was delicious.

We got back to the hotel and crashed, I think. I don't remember. Which probably means that's what happened.

Sorry there's no pictures in this post, but as I said I didn't take any pictures.

I will use another post later to describe in detail the next few days in L.A.

Also, just to clear something up, that picture of Heath Ledger from the previous post was not entirely random--I had seen his costume that day at the Warner Bros. Studio (again, you'll hear about it in the next post) and I thought, "Jeez, this guy was such a man repeller, using the oldest man-repelling trick in the book: LAYERING!!" I mean, he was wearing two vests and a jacket. If anyone can take a tip from Leandra Medine, it's the Joker.

See you all later! I'm off to do...probably nothing. That's all you can do in Las Vegas.

I Hopped Off the Plane At LAX in my JEANS and My Cardigan

Get it? I didn't have my dream, but I was wearing a cardigan as I hopped off the plane at LAX. I planned it that way. I was surprised that no one else that I saw was wearing a cardigan. It seemed like the only thing to do. And of course, I didn't get a picture of myself wearing my cardigan in front of a sign that said "Los Angeles" on it or anything because I was dead tired. I was up for 24 hours yesterday.

I feel awful about not posting, even though there's only about 10 people who read this. I feel obligated to blog every day, but it's gonna be really hard here. I have SO much to write about the past two days. And I have pictures to post. And lots of things like that. But for now I can't do these things because I have no internet in my room, so I have to sit in the lobby of the hotel to blog.

I will, however, leave you with this:

He's wearing two vests. And a jacket.

...And We're Off!

I know I did say I would post more today, but it is now 9:25 p.m., and I have to get up at 4 a.m. to leave for California, so that's not happening.

Sorry about that.

Our flight leaves JFK at 8 a.m., and we're going to see my sister's play, "The Adventures of Boy and Girl" at the Stella Adler Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. I don't know what time the show's at, but it's part of the Blank Theatre Company and the Young Playwright's Association competition. If you happen to be on Hollywood Boulevard tomorrow, come check it out!!

See you on the flipside. Meaning the other side of the country.

Happy Birthday Becky!

I mentioned this briefly last night, but now I actually have the pictures to show you. None of them are really full-on shots of the outfit, but you get the idea.

These pictures that I am talking about are the ones from my cousin Becky's surprise party on Saturday (June 18th) night. Today is actually her birthday, though, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY BECKY!!!!

And also happy first day of summer/summer solstice! Summer solstice begins in exactly a half hour from this second right now. That I am typing it. Sorry for the disjointed sentences, I had to get that all in while it was still 12:46 p.m. PHEW. Done.

All photos taken by Sara Feigin.

Romper: my mom's from the 80's
Belt: Urban Outfitters
Turband (scarf): Hamlet's Vintage
Necklace (which you can't see): Forever 21

Becky is overwhelmed by my turbanding skills. You also can't see it, but my hair was in a braid. I didn't get some crazy haircut.

You can see two things in this picture: the fact that my hair is not gone, and how bad my posture is.
Actually, I was watching my Aunt Pam attempt to hold herself up with her legs crossed on the floor. It was pretty funny.

Unrelated to Becky's party, my mom and I sadly did not watch "(500) Days of Summer" last night. We couldn't find our DVD of it. So we watched the first four episodes of "Will & Grace" instead. I forgot how funny that show is. If you've never seen it, you should definitely watch it sometime.

We did, however, make caramel popcorn, which was just sticky microwaved popcorn. I also made myself a glass of chocolate milk. It was derishus.

I am hoping to get to Urban Outfitters today to get myself a skirt or something like that before we go to California. I'm debating with myself how many Harry Potter books I should take with me, though. I could just bring numbers 5 and 6, and assume that I can finish the 7th in 11 days, as well as rewatch all of the movies. If you don't know what I'm basing all of this timing off of, you should check out this post.

I now have 10 followers!! Hey there Asha. Good to see you shawn.

KEEP FOLLOWING AND SPREADIN' THE GOOD WORD.

The End is Near

I am a freaking HUGE Harry Potter fan, and July 15th, 2011, marks the end of my life. The series ends on that day. This is the countdown clock:

More countdowns at Widgia.com

I know this has nothing to do with fashion, but it's still very, very important. I would fill a whole page with very's, that's how obsessed I am. But I guess by Nirrimi's definition, I'm not quite obsessed... Close enough.

Kalyfornia Gurl

We leave for the West Coast in 3 days, and I am super stoked. I've been a mix between super mellow and very irritable this past week, and this is really the only thing I've been excited about for a while. And I'm not even that excited yet.

My beautiful shoes arrived today, and they are awesome. They are a bit too wedge-ish, but I think I can handle it. They're a good color, they fit nicely and are comfortable, and they're not too tall that I feel stupid. Although I do feel like a giant around the rest of my family in them. I tried them on and stood in front of my mom, whose first response was: "God, you're 8 feet tall!" Which is of course an exaggeration, but in them I am considerably taller than her 5'1.5" frame. Livin' the short life.

Here's what my shoes look like, in case you forgot:

I would have taken a picture of me in them to show you all, but I am feeling terribly lazy today because I am sick. Thanks again to mah big sis for coughing all over me all week. You knew at some point I would eventually get sick, which is rare because I never get sick. It happens maybe twice a year at the most. I miss practically no school because of it, but whenever I wish that I were sick so that I could miss school, I try and remember how I feel like crap when I am sick. I can't really blame her for getting me sick, she says, because my immune system just failed this time. But I can blame her for breaching my immune system's security.

I think that at some point tomorrow I am going to go searching for a skirt and a bathing suit, two summer staples, and since California is practically the definition of summer, therefore California staples. I have $30 to spend at Urban and $25 to spend anywhere. That is if I don't touch my checking account. Which I really, really, really shouldn't. I need some money in California. Does anyone know what sales tax is over there? Just kidding, I'll Google it myself.

I just Googled it, and it's a whopping 9.75%!!! Now I really need to save myself some money. Shucks.

I have also requested the photos from my cousin Becky's surprise birthday party from my cousin Sara, because there are some pictures that show what I wore that day (to the Glee concert).

I am going to watch "(500) Days of Summer" with my mom soon. We are going to make homemade caramel popcorn (microwave Orville Redenbacher kettlecorn + Smucker's caramel drizzled on top.) and I might have a glass of chocolate milk. I'm really excited. Zooey Deschanel has been staring at me from the cover of the SELF magazine that's on my dining room table. I think my mom and I are both in the mood for some Joseph Gordon-Levitt, because we caught part of "Inception" on T.V. yesterday, and he's been chillin' in the back of my mind since then. I'll be sure to ask him what the back of my mind is like; I haven't been there for a while.

Please continue to spread the word about this blog if you like it; I got my friend Olivia to read it and now she's my 9th follower! I KNOW YOU'RE READING THIS OLIVIA, SO HAI!!!

I'll be sure to tell J. Gord-Levs that y'all say "hey."

Schoooool's Out For Summer!!

...Schooooool's out forever! ("School's Out" by Alice Cooper)

I managed to get a hold of that picture of me in my graduation dress that I was talking about earlier. You can't see my shoes, but they're the same ones I wore to my graduation party.
I was wearing a blazer that covered up the black satin bow that went around the waist, but it's there.

That's pretty much the only picture that was taken of me, that I know of. But that's totes magotes fine because my mom filmed literally the entire ceremony.

Also, my cousin Sara had her film camera with her today, so she did take pictures of me but they won't be developed until after we get back from California. But it's on my list of things to blog about, so I won't forget! Look:

This is the sticky note I created. Proof that I cannot forget.
Although I won't say that I never forget, because I am not an elephant.

P.S.: If you read my blog and are not yet a follower, please follow, even if you don't have a Blogspot account! You can use Google Friend Connect, by just signing in with your Google (usually Gmail, or another site such as your company/workplace powered by Gmail) email account. I really need some more followers!!

Thanks and enjoy the rest of your Father's Day!

Jeffrey Campbell (Chicken Noodle Possibilities!)

Just kidding, this post has absolutely nothing to do with Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup, but rather Jeffrey Campbell, a shoe designer that I have recently seen more and more of. I've never really been much of a shoe person, even once I got into fashion and actually thinking about my outfits. And being obsessed. It was one of those things I sort of ignored for myself, but I still acknowledged a nice pair of shoes when I saw them. But lately, I've started to become more interested in all kinds of shoes, as you can see in my two posts about my new platforms (which are supposed to come tomorrow!!!!). I think I'm also going to get more into bags soon as well, because I'm not much of a bag person either. That's about to change.

Jeffrey Campbell has been popping up all over the place recently: on Kaylee Nicole's blog Wild Flower and mostly at Urban Outfitters. I saw some JC platforms at Urban the other day that I really liked, but they were too expensive for my $75 budget ($75 at the very most, mind you). I got an email from Urban this morning about the new Jeffrey Campbell shoes that they just got in, so naturally I checked it out. I fell in love with this man's shoes. While eating breakfast, I decided to go through Urban's JC collection and pick out my favorites. Most of these are fairly inexpensive for adults, but for teenagers who buy their own clothes/shoes/accessories, they're outrageously expensive. There are however, a few pairs on sale. I saw one pair for $39.99!!! That's even less than the ones I just bought, but the JC ones aren't really platform wedges. You'll see them below in a quick sec.

These were the first pair I saw in the store. I picked them up and checked the price, then immediately put them down again. I did see another woman buying them later that day, though. They're a little tall for me, just because of my age, but if you're into the extreme height then go for it. The color is great for summer because orange is making a comeback as small accents, like as a nail polish shade, or for a colorblocking bag.

These are similar to the orange ones above, but I think they're a bit more versatile. The shape is simple yet original (see how on the crossing straps, one of them is eating the other one? That's what I'd call cannibalistic chic.), and the neutral color is easy to pair with nearly everything. Again, they're pretty tall, but if you can handle it then more power to you. The good thing about this pair and the orange platforms is that they're not too wedge-ish, so they won't be uncomfortable. The one thing I hate about all the heels that I have (the 2 pair that I have) is that they make the balls of my feet hurt like a bitch. Remember my graduation party? I wore those heels for 4 hours straight and then couldn't feel my feet for two days.

These are pretty sick shoes, I must say. JC is really into the cutout style, which you'll see with the next picture. These are what I would call statement shoes, from the cutout-ness to the print to the height—all of it screams “LOOK AT ME!! I'M DOWN HERE, THAT'S WHY IT'S HARD TO HEAR ME. YES LOOK DOWN, AT HER FEET. YEAH, RIGHT THERE. GOOD.” I really like these shoes, but like most of Jeffrey's shoes, they're a tad out of my current price range, if you know what I'm saying.

These snazzy kicks are a combo of several of my favorite things: platforms, cutouts, oxfords, the color white, wooden heels, and Jeffrey Campbell. Campbell's should create a new flavor, called Jeffrey Campbell Cutout Oxford Wedge. Sounds delish to me. I'd wear these shoes no doubt. But if you look at them for a while, you start to realize that there's just a huge freaking gap where your foot should go. That worries me a little. Sometimes you have to sacrifice some things for fashion, though, right? *Gulps and eyes the shoes nervously* Some is the key word here, I think.

I also love combat boots and Doc Martens, and cutouts, so when you mush them together, it's like Jeffrey just created a beautiful combat boot and chopped out the heel. Or got lazy and forgot to draw the heel in when he sent the drawings to the manufacturers. Just so you know, I have no idea how that works, so I don't think that's a likely scenario. I just threw that in there to give our imaginations a little bit of a party.

These are on sale and still $129. I might jump on that if I hadn't bankrupted myself this week. I don't regret it, but I did spend $54 at thrift stores/Pippin, $75 on a pair of shoes and $20 on a cute hat at J. Crew that was on sale. I forgot to tell you about that purchase. It was spontaneous—we went to J. Crew on Friday and I almost bought a floppy hat, but wise Mich talked me out of it by asking if I would actually wear it outside. Then we saw this hat, and thought it was adorable, so I spent the last of my cash on it. I apologize: I have digressed so much. More than usual. Anyway, these shoes are really cute because they're platform wedges that are white and are like Vans lace-ups, or some other company's lace-up canvas shoes. I can dig these.

As you should already know, it's Father's Day, so I wrote this while in the car on the way to my grandparent's house. I think I might be stupid and go swimming in their pool with a cough/cold. I have this thing where I'm immune to sickness and things like that so I ignore the obvious and inevitably have to suffer the repercussions. I never really seem to learn.

I might be back later today, but it depends on what we do today. My cousin Sara, the photographer, will also be there today, so I'm going to ask her to take pictures of me. I have my new J. Crew hat on today!

I'm sorry for forgetting to post pictures of my school's production of Oliver!, but I actually have the worst memory in the universe. I'll be senile by age 53, nbd.

I asked my friend Asha to send me the pictures from my birthday party, because I was wearing a pretty good outfit that day. Also, I know that I promised pictures from the beach on Monday, but Asha's camera accidentally deleted them. I can, however, get some pictures from my graduation. There's one that shows my dress pretty well. I'm making a to-do list right now of all the things I need to blog about.

Since I can't show you it right now, I'll just show you a picture of a woman from Coachella who was my outfit twin:
Minus the sunglasses, 'cause there was no sun, and minus the blond hair, because I don't have blond hair, that was basically me.

Have a happy Father's Day!!

My Life is Complete

There is so much to tell you all.
Yesterday was my birthday party. And if you live in New York, or anywhere in the tri-state area (I know this phrase from the animated show "Phineas and Ferb," a phrase used at least once per episode by the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz (*sung as a jingle* Evil Incorporated!)), it was raining. And we were planning to go to Central Park, and have a cute little picnic and go on the carousel.
Of freaking course it was raining. It just had to, didn't it?

We spent a while figuring out what to do, and we ended up camping out in the Time Warner Center, at Columbus Circle. Then the rain let up for a while and we had a small picnic of chips/beverages/cupcakes at a fountain. We then went searching for the carousel. Which wasn't open. COURSETY COURSE COURSE. So we got ice cream/hot dogs. Food fixes all problems. Wow that is the falsest statement I have made all day.

After this we played in a playground until it started raining again. Typiqual.

...But I got some great presents!!!!
I got:

  • a purple eyeliner and 2 necklaces from Forever 21 (I wore one of them today)
  • 3 hilarious books: Crazy Sh*t Old People Say, We're Just Like You, Only Prettier, and Damn You, Autocorrect! I read all of Damn You, Autocorrect! Last night. It is freekadeekin' hilarioso.
  • a $25 Visa giftcard
  • a supercrazyawesome yellow wristwatch. But here's the catch: it's like those supercrazyawesome snap bracelets, but a watch. And it's yellow. A man repeller? I think so. Like I need another way to repel the opposite sex.
  • A small beaded purse to match my beaded collar, which I wore to my party (from Lola, who else?). The weird thing is she bought it before I bought my collar. Crazy shiznits going down at Pippin. I must remember to tell you something important about this, but I will reveal it later.
  • a $30 giftcard to Urban
  • a pad of really nice paper, a calligraphy pen with several different pen tips and black, magenta and green ink
  • a Harry Potter coloring book (over 300 pages! I know what I'll be doing on the plane ride to California), a bag of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans (I'm terrified of these, yet intrigued at the same time), and an Arctic Monkeys mix tape.
  • and last but no where near least, a framed and autographed picture that I took with Darren Criss last summer, that my wonderful friend Esme got signed for me when she went backstage at the Glee concert Thursday. I almost cried when she gave it to me. He wrote: "Hey Odelia! Happy birthday! Great pic! I miss my hair... *heart* *autograph* *smiley face* !" Esme sort of lied and said it was my birthday the next day so he'd write something personal. I secretly wanted him to know that I have the same birthday as Harry Potter so that he'd think I'm cool, but I'm glad I got the autograph. More than glad. It's sitting on my dresser. I look at it before I go to bed and when I wake up in the morning.
It was a very successful birthday, if you just read the above list.

My friend Asha took some pictures, so I'll post those when she puts them on Facebook.

Lola and Mich slept over, and we read Damn You, Autocorrect! and watched some Barats and Bereta videos, as well as some Jake and Amir

Scratch That.

Please feel free to ignore everything I previously said about needing to buy those Cooperative platforms. I guess that there was a reason why I was unable to get my hands on a pair; I just wasn't meant to have them. After my post last night, I went to order them online and I looked at the reviews. People mostly gave them one star and said they fall apart after only a few wears. I was really disappointed, because they were kind of perfect, but why spend $60 on shoes that are going to just break after wearing them a few times? I plan to wear my platforms all summer. And forever.

I decided to go check out my ever-faithful Zappos, with their free shipping and awesome selection. After searching through nearly 37 pages of just platforms (fine, I didn't look through all of them. Sue me. Good luck with that, I'm a minor. That paperwork's gonna be a bitch.), I found some worthy contenders, though for the most part, they were either too expensive or too wedge-ish. I'm fickle and picky when it comes to buying shoes. Call me pickle.

I eventually selected a pair of DV by Dolce Vita shoes:

What you see is: DV by Dolce Vita Tami platform wedges in Natural.

I felt that these were in a versatile color and shape. I like how simple they are, because they won't distract too much from other aspects of potential outfits, because platform wedges are already pretty eye-catching, especially when worn by a teenager. They had these in black, gold and turquoise as well, but I felt that those were a little too cray-cray. And that's saying a lot, because I rarely think things are too crazy. That would just be hypocritical.

They were about $5 more than the Cooperative ones, and they are much higher quality. I was actually really surprised to find out that the Cooperative platforms were bad, because that's the same brand that made my beloved brown suede shoes, and they have held up so well through so much. I had to stay faithful to Urban, though. They sell some Dolce Vita items, so I don't feel like I was betraying them.

I'm a little worried that they might be too wedge-ish and not platform-y enough, but we shall see. I paid $7 extra to get these here in 3 business days, because we leave for the West Coast on Thursday, at 4 a.m., so they absolutely must be here before then. I'm really excited.

I'm also really excited to go shopping with the giftcards/money I am most likely going to receive from my wonderful friends later today (hi guys, if you're reading this!!). I will save most of it for California though, I need to get on that laid-back Cali style.

Have a happy Friday, everyone!

Bill Cunningham New York

This afternoon I saw the documentary on Bill Cunningham, "Bill Cunningham New York" with my friend Marcelo at the IFC Center in Greenwich Village. Ever since I saw an article about it somewhere, I've been wanting to see it. I'm someone who always puts things off until the very last possible minute, and then I'm screwed because I have no time left to do it. That's why I was like, "Let's go see this today, right now, or else I never will." I need to start making more decisions like that. I just think way too much. It's a serious problem.

But sometimes I also don't think enough. Like today, while at Urban Outfitters for the 2ND TIME IN ONE DAY, I didn't bother to think about how I'm going to be up by Central Park tomorrow for my birthday party, maybe I could swing by the Urban on 72nd and pick up a pair of those Cooperative Janis Platforms that I've gone to about 20 different stores for. It didn't even cross my mind. So when the woman at the one on 8th street asked me if I wanted to hold a pair there, I said no, then realized my mistake later and went back to the 14th street location that I'd been at earlier today to try and hold that pair at 72nd. After 10 minutes of waiting, the guy who was helping me came back and was like, "Yeah, the people at 72nd have never even heard of those shoes." That's the 3rd time this has happened today. Marcelo thinks I'm not meant to have these shoes, but I will have them, goddamnit. Before I go to California, at least, which is on the 22nd. I have a little bit of time. I'm thinking of just giving in and ordering them online, which I hate to do, but I may have to.

Back to the movie. You may know Bill for his sections in the New York Times, "On the Street"and "Evening Hours." For those of you who don't know, Bill Cunningham was the first street style photographer, and probably the most successful one at that. He is the sweetest, funniest, most down-to-earth, generous, adorable and incredible people I've ever heard of. He's 82 years old now, so he's been at this for about 50 years. He was a milliner before he got into street style photography, but now that's literally all he does. He bikes around the city, just waiting for wonderful clothing to cross his path. He party hops all night and takes pictures there as well. He barely eats, and he used to be one of the last two residents of the artists' studios in Carnegie Hall. They eventually kicked him out. Anyway, it's a fantastic movie that I highly recommend. You should definitely see it.

Here are some helpful links for learning more about the movie:
This is the main site for the film: http://www.zeitgeistfilms.com/billcunninghamnewyork/
This is IFC's information about it: http://www.ifccenter.com/films/bill-cunningham-new-york/
This is the list of every place that it showed at or is showing at: http://www.zeitgeistfilms.com/billcunninghamnewyork/playdates.html

Sorry that there's no pictures tonight; I was very busy today. I took my math regent, and saw a movie, and went to the gym, and went shopping (more like waited in Urban Outfitters while people looked for my shoes) and did 2 and a half hours of tedious work in my old school's library. There will be pictures of tomorrow very soon though: Edith and Asha are bringing their cameras to my party tomorrow!! I really wanted to wear my new platforms that I would've had tomorrow, but sadly I can't. I've decided in the past five minutes that I'm just going to give in and order them.

'Night, folks!

I'm a Tad Short...

I'm only a bit above 5'2" as of a few months ago. I don't know my exact height, but I'm what someone would call petite. Not for my age, because I still have time to grow, but I'm not expecting anything past 5'4" or 5'5". Even that would be a miracle. My whole family is short. My mom is 5'1.5", my sister is 5'.25" and my dad is 5'8", or something. My sister takes a lot of pride in that quarter inch. It took her a very long time to hit the 5-foot mark.

Today, Lola and I went to Urban Outfitters, then to Second Time Around, then Payless, all in search of a decent pair of platform sandals for me, 'cause I'm so short. And because they're so freaking awesome. We were so successful yesterday, that we thought we might have some luck today. Second Time Around and Payless were a little disappointing, but there were some promising options at Urban. However, I didn't buy anything today. I saw a pair by Cooperative, who also made my brown suede shoes that I bought from Urban and wore almost every day throughout winter and spring, but this pair of sandals were metallic, and stupid little me didn't bother to ask if they had them in any other colors. And of course it turns out they do. So I believe I'll go back either tomorrow or Friday to get them. They are awesome. I can't decide between black and brown, but I'll try both on.

Here they are in black:

And in brown, or as they call it, cognac:
These are the ones I tried in the store. Urban's website calls the color "pewter," but I call it metallic.
If you click this link you'll find these shoes and you can order them and we can be shoe twinsies!!!!

P.S. I wore my denim jacket for the first time today, and I'm wearing it again tomorrow. It's incredible. I also wore a fedora today. It was fun.

Why Wear a Collared Shirt When You Can Wear Just the Collar?

Today was my last day of 8th grade and of middle school. I know that it should have been terribly sad, considering the fact that I am not coming back to the same school next year for the first time ever, but I was surprisingly calm and collected. That might be because I barely said goodbye to anyone. My whole class basically left before I got a chance to do so, because I went up to the 6th and 7th grade classrooms to see my little friends there. They're a bit obsessed with 8th graders. It gets creepy at times but it's cute.

I guess.

I can't tell if the lack of closure is going to screw me over mentally and emotionally later, or if it's for the best. It's totally going to hit me at some random time, like when I'm taking my über important math regent tomorrow. That'd really suck.

After graduation, my two best (male) friends, Marcelo and Ben, dragged me up the street to a really fancy restaurant called Da Silvano. For 10 years, I've wanted to go to either Da Silvano or Bar Pitti (the other really fancy restaurant that is directly adjacent to it. Both restaurants have a knack for attracting very famous people. Some examples are: Lindsay Lohan, Gwen Stefani, Ashely Olsen, Jim Carrey, Jim Gaffigan, Matt Bomer and Rachel Roy, who I saw the other day and no one else recognized. 'Tis a shame. …I digress.), and today I finally did. It was quite exciting. After our very Italian and classy lunch, Ben left, but Marcelo, Mich (who joined us at the restaurant and just chilled) and I went to Lola's house. This is where the fashion part comes in.

A little after we got to Lola's, we decided to go out just as it began to rain. Marcelo had to rush off, but Lola, Mich and I went in to Housing Works, Angel Street Thrift Shop and Pippin's. These are all thrift stores. Except for Pippin's. Quick side note: the three of us, and in the past Edith as well, always go shopping for clothing/birthday presents/they are usually the same thing for me right after school gets out, and I was worried we wouldn't get to today. This was more like casual thrifting, but it was très fun. Back to the story. I've been meaning to go to some thrift stores because I have very low funds, but there are none in my neighborhood. Now here is the magic of thrift shops (and Pippin's): I got 5 awesome things for just under $54.

I got a pair of Abercrombie & Fitch flare jeans for $5 and a cute little Charlotte Russe open sweater vest for $10 at Housing Works, then a book for $1 and a Gap denim jacket for $18 at Angel Street, and finally I got a beaded collar for $19.60, with tax, at Pippin's.

YEAH, YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY. ALL THAT FOR UNDER $54. THAT IS BEAST.

I can't smush all of that wondrousness into one post, so I'm starting with the only one that I could easily photograph by myself and late at night, which is the collar.

While in Pippin's, a little jewelry/accessories shop in Chelsea, Mich found a little basket with three beaded collars from the 1950's in it. I immediately fell in love. I was inspired by the Man Repeller's post about Eleven Objects' detachable collars, but those were ridicky expernsive (that's not a typo, it's supposed to be said with a sassy accent of your choosing), so I sort of forgot about them. Then I saw these ones for $18, and I was like, "Yo, I gotta get on that." So I tried one on and bought it about a minute later. Check it out, homes!

This is my lovely detached, beaded collar! It's as easy to wear as a necklace, so I'm gonna be wearin' dis thing awl day, erry day.

Here it is "unfolded," if you will. I'm not sure how else to say it.

And another, just because this lighting is a tad better.

This is my collar all clasped together, chillaxin' on the floor of my room.
I would just like to take this time to comment on the fact that while typing the word "chillaxin," Blogspot at first underlined it in red, telling me it was not a word, then thought better of it and took the red line away. I see that Blogspot's been reading it's fair share of Urban Dictionary, no?

I will display pictures of my new finds soon as well. I plan to wear as many of them as I can on Friday, at my birthday party. This should be good. I'll ask my friend Asha to bring her camera so that I'll have decent pictures, for once.

Peace out up.
Quoting Lil Jon is what's up.

I Want Free Money

Tomorrow is my big 8th grade graduation (or as we call it, "Moving Up Ceremony"), so I can't post a lot. But I was checking Liz's blog, Late Afternoon, and her most recent post was about a giveaway that Threadsence is doing. If I share their lookbook in as many places as I can, I'll get more entries, a.k.a. a better chance of winning a $75 shopping spree to Threadsence.

Here is the link to their Summer 2011 lookbook: http://www.threadsence.com/lookbook_sum11.html

Enjoy!!

I Dreamed a Dream

Yes, I know that this is the 4th time that I've used a song name/lyric as a post title (Be Back Soon, I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor and Black Dress With the Tights Underneath), and this is the 2nd consecutive day that I've done it, but that's because this post is quite literally about my dream. And I also listened to that song today.

may will sound like every other person who wants this, but I want to be a fashion designer. I know that there are tons of people who say that, but I have been working towards it for years. I started using a sewing machine at age 6, and ever since then I've been dedicated to fashion design and art. I'm not yet able to put into words the reason why I want it so bad, but there is just beauty in clothing that's different from other forms of art. I'm not as intrigued by paintings and drawings as I am by clothing. That's partly why I've got this blog.

The reason I think I may be different from other people who want to be fashion designers is that I'm obsessed. I spend hours a day on fashion blogs, browsing clothing websites, reading fashion magazines, designing clothes and sewing. Last Sunday I started on a pair of lavender, high-waisted sailor style shorts, and I finished them today. I brought them to school throughout the week to work on them in my free time, and I worked on them on my subway rides to and from school. Sometimes I doubt my decision to go to LaGuardia as an art major instead of a singing major, but then I realize that I'm not obsessed with singing. Sure, it's fun and I love it and there's nothing like hearing a beautiful note and knowing you created it, but I'm not obsessed.

One of the people I admire, Nirrimi Hakanson, once said, "If you go through an entire day without doing something towards your dream, you're not obsessed enough to make it happen." I thought about that the other day, in order to make sure I was obsessed. I do something towards my dream everyday, and that's how I know it will come true. You may still shake your head and sigh at my naivety, but that's alright because I know it's true and that's all that matters right now.

But don't be fooled, this post isn't just about my lifelong dreams and aspirations. I wanted to show you all some pictures of my shorts!

Et voilà! (This is so cool: did you know that you can press option and that weirdo key next to the 1 button and it makes that backwards accent mark??? If I had a nickel for every time I could've used this when writing that 8-page essay in French, I'd have enough to fill a sock and hit you over the head with it. This last part was paraphrased from Benjamin Trachtenberg, I take no credit.)

The thing about the pieces that I actually end up sewing is that they're never things that I ever drew designs for. I just kind of go for it. For these, I was like, "I want to make a pair of high-waisted shorts," so I took out my Soffe pajama bottoms, laid them out on a piece of fabric I haven't used in about 3 years and traced them out.

I also was going to make them longer, and I remembered to extend the legs on the front panels of the pattern, but forgot to do the same for the back panels. So when I was sewing them together I was like, "WTF??!!" I was too lazy to re-do the back panels and just made them shorter.

My camera doesn't know how to capture a clear shot of anything that's closer than 4 feet away.

I was trying to show you all the buttons on these shorts, 'cause they're pretty cute. But you see how that turned out. What's cool about these is that they were my great-grandmother's. I found them in an old sewing kit she gave me, and I thought they looked really nice with these shorts.

Also, when I sew garments, they're never quite on-trend or anything, they're just things I make up as I go along. I really hope that changes as I learn more about sewing and stuff.

These don't fit me at all, the waist is about 24 inches. I said that if they didn't fit me, I'd sell them, so that's exactly what I'm going to do. I'll put them on Etsy, and I'll try and figure out how to make a page on my blog where I can sell stuff that I make or things that I want to get rid of, sort of like shopstolenfromgrandma.blogspot.com and shopflashesofstyle.blogspot.com. I may just have to make a new blog, like they did, and link it to this one, but it would just be called shopyoureatulle.blogspot.com, or something.

One last thing before I go: could anyone who reads this post write a comment on it? I'm trying to figure out how many people actually read this. You can just write something like, "I read it."

Sorry this post wasn't funny at all. For some reason, I'm not really in a funny mood today. I'll be back to normal soon though, I promise.

Black Dress With the Tights Underneath

...Is what everyone else wore to every bat mitzvah and party all year long. I must congratulate my class for not wearing that yesterday to our graduation party, but I am a little disappointed that they only wore dresses and skirts. Now, who EVER said that you can only wear dresses and skirts to parties? What about a romper? Or even better, a jumpsuit? That's what I was thinking when I was picking out what to wear to the party.

It's actually kind of cool: I asked my mom if I could borrow something of hers for the party, and she took out a high-waisted, tight, turquoise denim skirt, a high-waisted leather skirt, a high-waisted floral, pleated skirt and delicious black jumpsuit. I already own one of her black jumpsuits, but I wouldn't say it's the most flattering thing in the world, nor is it appropriate for a party. When I saw it, I was like, "That's it. That's the one." Of course I tried on everything else and marveled at my mom's crazy wardrobe, but I stayed loyal to my good friend the jumpsuit.

About my mom's closet: While searching for these things, we found several totally awesome super-mega-foxy-awesome-hot (this is a double reference to Starkid Theater Company's "A Very Potter Musical") things such as an abstract print crop top pants suit and assorted knit crop tops (my mom was very croppy toppy, I guess), among others.

Sorry about the 1. lack of photographs and 2. lack of photographic skill, my mother grudgingly took one measly photo of me, and reluctantly took the other two from today's earlier post.

I got several compliments, mostly from my friend Asha, who is a fellow wearer of jumpsuits. Her and I are always talking about clothes. Her clothing comes solely from Forever 21, H&M and Topshop, with the occasional J. Crew sweater. Her style is awesome. I'll have to show you some pictures of her sometime.

I apologize for not posting in so long, but this week was super busy. On Monday night I got home supah late for some reason, on Tuesday was my science Exploratorium (this is actually a real word, surprisingly), on Wednesday I...had some reason for not posting, or maybe not, I don't know. Extra points for honesty? On Thursday night I went with a few classmates and my awesome librarian Jen to Jen's class she teaches at Pratt Institute to talk about books and reading. I'm a book junkie, sort of. We had lively debate about books vs. Kindles, and about Minecraft, and Ben said the occasional profound quote that Jen tweeted on her iPad. It was a fun night. And then on Friday, I had my graduation party and slept over at Lola's house. And now I'm here, blogging!

School ends Tuesday, my last day at Little Red. Ever. Next fall I head to LaGuardia.
On Monday we take a class trip to the beach. I shall definitely post pictures of that at some point.
I will also post pictures of my graduation.
And pictures of my school's production of Oliver!, if I ever remember to download the disc of the photos that I have.

I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. Which I'm not, 'cause that wouldn't make any sense.

The Quest Has Been Completed

On Wednesday, June 8th, 2011, my quest for the perfect shorts was completed.

Let me tell you the story.

It was an outrageously hot day for early June (92 degrees Farenheit, Lola checked on her crazy high-tech iPhone that detects the temperature, or something), and Lola mumbled, "I should probably get a dress for graduation..." and I was like, "Let's go to Urban Outfitters!" But I didn't say it like that. I'm just trying to get to the point here, so I'm sparing you the other details of the conversation. So anoué (this is legitimately how you say "anyway" in Canadian French), we walked to the Urban Outfitters on 14th Street and 6th Avenue, our location of choice, and after perusing their large selection of cute, summery dresses, most of which were either too sheer, too inappropriate for an 8th grade graduation, too ornate or too expensive, we found an adorable white dress that felt like it was made of the vanilla frozen custard at Shake Shack put into fabric form. I apologize for that ridiculously long sentence.

On our way to the dressing rooms, on the table that's right near the entrance, I saw them: the perfect shorts. There was a whole stack of them, in fact, in two different washes and--all in a size 34 waist, about 7 sizes too big. I was heart-broken, and had almost lost all hope, when I went to someone who worked there and asked if they had any more in a smaller size. She said these shorts were difficult because since they were taken apart and then re-sewn, they didn't really have sizes, and she'd try and find something "comparable."

She came back 15 minutes later and said she'd set out a whole new stack on the table. Lola and I darted out of the dressing room and began sorting through the pile. I picked up two pairs, one in a light wash and a size small, one in a darker wash and a size medium, and tried both on. The lighter pair looked better, though still a little big, but the hem was a little funky, so I went to find another pair since there were so many. I went back to the pile and found another pair that looked similar, but were one size smaller (30 vs. 31), so I tried those on instead. At first, I thought they were too short. Like hot pants short. I was kind of uncomfortable stepping out of the dressing room to show Lola, they were that short. But we both agreed that they fit better, and that I could just cut the stitches that held the cuffs up (which is the first thing I did when I got home that night).

And so, my 7 followers, I bought a pair of Urban Renewal Levi's Regular Fit 505 Waist 30 Shorts for $28, therefore achieving my goal. One down, one to go. (Overalls. See the end of this post to see where i mentioned this.)

Here are the shorts at their original length:
See how short these are?! At my school, your shorts have to reach your fingertips when you put your arms by your side (a rule which we never really follow). I would have been crucified had I worn these to school without letting down the cuff.

And this is me wearing them, for the third time since Thursday. But only for half an hour yesterday, so really just twice.

And there ya are! I'm quite certain that I'll be living in these shorts all summer. I'm not kidding. I will literally set up a small living space inside of them for myself between the months of June and August. They'll be sort of like my summer home.

As an aside, last night was my 8th grade class's (I know that's grammatically incorrect, I just couldn't leave it at "class' " because then I'd read it as just class in my head, and that's not what I'm saying) graduation party and while every other girl wore either a dress or a skirt and top, I stayed true and typiqual to myself and wore a jumpsuit. Yep, I wore a fricking black, vintage 90's jumpsuit that used to belong to my mother, with heels of course, to a party.

LOL.

Dumpster Divin'

This is going to sound a little silly, but the other day (Friday, to be exact) Lola and I went dumpster diving for mannequins. It all started when I got a text message from my mother saying that Lola's mom had seen some mannequins that a fashion high school was tossing out, and did I want to go check it out? Naturally, I said HELL YES (but not to my mom, she would disapprove), and Lola and I went to 25th and 8th (I'm not exactly sure. Somewhere in that area anyway.) with Lola's mom and her friend.

We arrived at a dumpster, filled to the brim with destroyed and thoroughly abused mannequins of every shape, size and age (Lola's mom took home about 5 child-sized mannequins). I was looking for one with legs, one that would cost $450, excluding tax, at Mood Fabrics, the greatest fabric store ever, and the official fabric store of Project Runway. After taking out several dress forms and laying them along the dumpster, I finally found mine: a Superior Model Form Corp mannequin, size 9, and positively demolished. Not to the point that she can't be used, but enough to make my mom question whether there are bed bugs chillin inside the many holes. Thanks, mom, for always being so optimistic.

Before I show you the photos I took of my currently unnamed mannequin, I would like to inform you that Lola and I decided to steal every piece of ribbon, shoelace or elastic and their accompanying pins and stick them on my dress form to take home. That's what all that crap is, just hanging out there.

This is my beloved mannequin. Just chillin inside of a sled. Nbd.

These are those infamous bed bug-ridden holes I was telling you about.

And here's that sketchy red ribbon I stole.

Sketchy red ribbon + sketchy elastic = über fun!!!!

This is where her head would be. And there's also a black shoelace strung across her chest.

That's all for now, folks. I will alert you when she is named.
