Trending Next Spring: Matchy-Matchy

You can match your heels to your dress, your accessories to your clothing, but it's been a while since people have been told to match their pants to their shirts. That's right, guys: the matchy-matchy suit is coming back!

The modern version is similar to the pant and skirt suits worn in the past, but way cooler because they're always in prints. Always. I can show you in a minute. I always do, don't I?

A lot of people are afraid of prints. I don't really know why, they don't bite. If you spend the time to get to know them, they're actually quite nice. The number seven is the one to watch out for (I heard a rumor that seven ate nine?! Now that's scary.). You better mentally prepare yourself this winter, because next spring, prints are gonna be all over the place, and in large quantities too.

The tricky thing about wearing prints is that mixing them is difficult, but if you do it right, it's magical. Now, you don't really have to worry about mixing them when it's the same pattern. Easy peasy lemon squeezy stuff here.

I bet you're really excited to see all the pictures, right? I am. Let's do this.

Full on suits:
                                    DKNY                                                                      House of Holland

                                     Jil Sander                                                            Paul & Joe

                                  Peter Som                                                                        Prabal Gurung

                                 Sass & Bide                                                                    Stella McCartney

Cute lil' ensembles:
                                     Derek Lam                                                                               DKNY

                              Diane von Furstenberg                                                                J.Crew

                                 Proenza Schouler                                                              Stella McCartney

Ain't it great? It may be a bit harder to find suits like these for a reasonable price, but I'm sure they exist. Maybe I'll do a "look for less" sort of thing once the stores start selling their spring merchandise. Thoughts?

Enjoy the final hours of the long weekend--I'm about to spend them reading Jane Eyre. What good fun!

Scarlet Slacks

Maybe "scarlet" is a bit much, but you all know how I like plays on words--puns, alliterations, the whole deal. You also know how much I love to study trends, but never actually adhere to them. So here's another great trend that I've spotted on the interwebs that I don't really intend on trying out, mainly because I'm not quite sure where I'd find reasonably priced red pants. I started noticing this little guy peaking out when I saw Aimee Song of Song of Style and Natalie of Natalie Off Duty wearing red jeans within a few days of each other. Now, these are some pretty fashionable gals, so I started rifling through my archives and found a few other examples to prove my point. Lemme show ya!

Aimee Song of Song of Style

Natalie of Natalie Off Duty

See? SEE? Yes. The trend is there, and this time it's current! I'm not a whole season ahead, you'll all be happy to know. You may have noticed that I've posted a lot about the color red lately (do you recall this post, this one and this one, too?). I also have It's because it's one of my favorite colors right now. I've always loved it, but it's having a big moment.

I hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving. I don't believe my family actually gave thanks for anything at any point--we just kind of ate. And I, of course, have kept on eating; I have something of a sweet tooth. That's an understatement: if I were to have one tooth in my mouth that were my sweet tooth, it would take up all the space in there. That's how much I like sugar. It's really a huge problem (whatever pun that was there was intended).

I Give Thanks For Cheap Clothing

Believe it or not, that title is also a pun.

So today's Thanksgiving, y'all! Give thanks for everything! I'm giving thanks for my family, my friends...and my abundance of clothing. Especially the stuff I get for $14 at Buffalo Exchange that really cost like $100. That would be referring to the Cheap Monday jeans I got last Saturday, which I wore the other day. I will now present to you the pictures I took of said pants.

All photos taken by me and a piece of furniture, what's new.

I took these pictures after I went to the photography club at my school, so I was playing around with different effects on my camera. I actually like the way it turned out.

This was taken with my usual settings. You can't see the details as well like this.
Lace tank top: Gap
Sheer top: Whitewash via my Aunt Melne
Flannel shirt: Arrow Blue Jean Co.
Belt and boots: Urban Outfitters

Cuffed jeans again!

Cheap Monday!!!

They go all out when they make a pair of pants.

The logo is even on their tags, and on the interior of the pockets!!! How great is this??

I'll be wearing these jeans very often, despite the fact that they are one of the most unflattering pairs of pants I own. Sometimes you have to compromise looking attractive for the coolness of wearing German jeans, am I right?

I'm bringing my camera to my family's Thanksgiving celebration, so there shall be documentation. We might have another Father's Day situation, where I don't post them until a month later, but hopefully not.

Once again, have a happy Thanksgiving and a merry new year (if they've already got Christmas trees out out on the streets of New York, it's practically New Years, isn't it?).

Collar Me Pink

You all know how much I love puns, so I couldn't resist.

Midterms finally ended today, so I'm free as a bird! I also have so many ideas lined up for posts, it's ridiculous. Mentally prepare yourselves.

Back to the title: you'll see in just a moment that the other day I wore my YSL sweater and my Liz Claiborne silk top (wore here, here, here and here) and my new Mavi jeans that I picked up from Buffalo Exchange on Sunday. If you've never been to/heard of Buffalo Exchange, it's essentially the best thrift store I've ever shopped at. It has a huge selection of very reasonably priced goods (I saw a pair of Docs there for $28 and my friend got a pair of really nice shoes for $11 the other week). They have a lot of designer stuff as well--tons of (Marc by) Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, some Prada, Cheap Monday--the list goes on. I almost died when I went there the other day because I got a pair of high-waisted Cheap Monday jeans for $14 and a Marc by Marc Jacobs tote bag for $15. Greatest finds ever.

Before I show you my pictures, I'd just like to talk about my new photo venue. I can't use my hallway anymore because it gets dark before I get home, so the hallway is too dark to use. I have resorted to using my bedroom, which is why you'll see me standing in front of a shelf of boardgames and such. Don't ask questions. And to answer the question you're not allowed to ask, no I do not play Dungeons and Dragons.

All photos taken by me and a dresser (I asked for a tripod and remote for Hanukah so hopefully I won't have to prop my camera up on furniture for much longer).

Ignore the clothing/baskets in the background. THOSE ARE AN ILLUSION.

Blouse: Liz Claiborne
Sweater: YSL
Jeans: Mavi
Socks: Spongebob (yes, I am legit)
Shoes: Christian Siriano for Payless

I'm kind of obsessed with cuffing my jeans recently. It reminds me of J. Crew and of being a kool kid. I've been fantasizing about wearing cuffed, straight leg jeans for a while now, and my dreams have finally come true.

And there you have it. Also my hair is in pigtails, so yeah. I felt like an especially kool kid with my pigtails, cuffed jeans and Spongebob socks.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving (no der), so happy Turkey Day to you all!

The Redcoats Are Coming!

Here's a little chunklet of my newest article from Chictopia. I forgot I could do this.
Enjoy, guys!

“The Redcoats are coming!”

We all know that this is what Paul Revere shouted as he rode into Boston on his horse when announcing the arrival of the British. Few people know that this is what I shouted while examining the fall runway photos last spring.

Another thing that we all know is that red is making a comeback, especially on lips. With the revival of the feminine lady of the 1940’s (see the Miu Miu F/W 2011), it’s no surprise that the color red, with all its bright, fun girly-ness is tagging along for the ride. The problem with red is that it’s so loud that many people are afraid to wear it in large quantities. Our fellow Chictopians aren’t afraid of colorblocking neons, so I hope to God that you all are red-dy (oh how I love puns!) to rock this trend like you are paid to do it, which I bet some of you are. The best way to go all out crimson on us in these cold winter months is to buy a red coat. Coats are the best way to look smashing whilst (unfortunately) covering up all those strategically layered pieces underneath your outerwear. If you’re going to invest in a new jacket this season, these are the ones to be buying:

THE ANKLE GRAZER:
INSPIRATION: Alexander McQueen (see the above photograph)
This man was just a genius. There’s no way he was from this planet. The McQueen coat is the one in the main photo, and as you can see, it’s pretty intense. It’s like a ‘60s version of Hagrid’s cloak, but better. There’s some fur at the collar, nice little black cuffs—but note that all of the embellishments are very simple. My advice for wearing a floor-length red coat is to keep the silhouette uncomplicated and the other details minimal to avoid looking clownish. The proportion and color could easily make you look like a circus runaway.
LOOK FOR LESS: It’s difficult to find a cheaper version because it’s so unique, but if you’re willing to pay for a McQueen coat, I will worship you forever. There is one from ASOS that’s not quite the same, but still pretty out there. It’s the ASOS Fit and Flare Coat with Frill Back for $119.50.

I also have some exciting news: I was informed today that my blog will be reviewed and featured by Vogue Patterns magazine as a part of their Web Watch section. It's gonna be in the February/March 2012 issue of the magazine, which will be on sale starting in January. I'm actually beyond excited, you have no idea.

I dunno about you, but I'm gearing up for Turkey Day. Anyone dressing up as said bird? Anyone? Well, that's gonna be awkward when I walk into my grandma's house wearing a turkey costume and I'm the only one attired like so.

Trending Next Spring: Geometry

It feels so good to be back. I missed this. It was a pretty hectic week, so thank the good Lord above that it is Friday (note: I am not a Jesus freak).

I'll get to my quick life recap at the end of the post, as per yooj (yooj=usual), but this part is essential to mention before I dive into my next spring trend. I had a geometry test today, so I thought, "What better time to post about the shapes trend than today?" and then I answered, "No time!" to which I replied, "That was rhetorical."

Not to be confused with colorblocking, this trend is all about playing with geometric shapes. Like, literally playing with them. Maybe a game of tennis, or frisbee, if it's nice outside. I kid. You'll actually only be displaying shapes on your clothes: maybe not as active, but still plenty of fun. I can usually figure out the connections next spring's trends have with current or past trends, but I can't quite place this one. It was a very subtle shift, since the tribal patterns of last season and this season are so geometric, but the shift is there. That was a pun because Carolina Herrera actually did a shape-printed shift dress. Oh, fashion punz; how I love you so. I can't decide if that sentence butchered the English language, so I'll just move on.

The thing about this trend is that the actual shape and the placement of said shape is crucial. This is a trend easily gone wrong. The same way vertical stripes and chevrons are slimming, an awkwardly proportioned and placed square can make you look like a pumpkin. Not quite sure how, but I bet it can happen. It's a really fun trend if you do it right, so have fun with it! Shapes were created for a reason, and that reason was so people could wear them.

Now for the moment we've all been waiting for: the photographic proof. Let's get this party started, shall we?

Make it a theme:

                                     Céline                                                                              Chanel

Add some shape(s) to your outfit:

                                                                        Alberta Ferretti

People that are ready to rock the trend full on are entitled to do so, while others who'd rather incorporate math more subtly may also do so. FASHION, YOU GIVE ME SO MANY OPTIONS THAT I'M OVERWHELMED.

Now for my quick life recap!
1. I have begun a legitimate project: I'm taking all the photos I've cut out of magazines and compiling them into a book. It's going to be the best book ever, and my holy shrine. Just sayin'.
2. My newest article on the Huffington Post went up yesterday! Check it out HERE!
3. I found this article to be a kind of a summary of my life.

That's all for now, guys! I'll be back in the game ASAP. You know I love this blog.

Work That Up 'Do

Remember this video?

Sorry I haven't been blogging all week: midterms have begun again (we have midterms six times a year, plus more midterms in January, then finals in June and regents. What is this.) so I've been kind of freaking out. I had a minute to pop in and just share a picture with you all.

Over the past few days, hair has for some reason been a common topic of conversation for me, and more than once have I realized how much I want Solange Knowles' hair:

It could easily function as a pillow, which is very helpful in long car rides and when on an airplane.

It's so practical, I don't know why everyone doesn't have this hair.

P.S. Check out my latest article on Chictopia and vote it "chic" if you've got an account!
P.P.S. I'll be back to posting more regularly as soon as I can, I pwomise.

When You Wish Upon A Star

Does this topic sound familiar? It might if you've been reading this blog since June (remember this post?) I don't know if you remembered, but I write for both the Huffington Post and Everybody Is Ugly, but I haven't published anything on HuffPost for a while. This is my next article. You guys get to see it before it goes on their website! How exciting!

Enjoy, munchkins!

I can't remember a time in my life when fashion and art were not a part of it. That's not an exaggeration, and may or may not have something to do with my short-term memory loss issues. When I was three, I was supposedly telling my mom what to wear (how I did this, I don't know) and had a pretty darn good sense of color too, also according to my mother. At age six, I used my first sewing machine, and my friend Lola and I started hand-sewing shirts on the weekends, just for kicks. I've got tons of appalling and embarrassingly bad sketches from when I was in elementary school stashed in a drawer. It was all good fun; I took a hand-sewing class after school for a semester once, drew some pictures in my free time, but it wasn't the focus of my life. Then came the summer before seventh grade, my first summer at the Fashion Institute of Technology. That might have been one of those turning points in my (short) life when I was like, “By golly, I know what I wanna do when I grow up!” I went back the next summer and focused on my drawing and painting skills and spent a ridiculous amount of time preparing for the LaGuardia High School admissions exam, which entailed hours of making art. All of my hard work paid off, and by the middle of 8th grade, I was on my way to completing my five-year plan (oh yes, you read that correctly. This is the very plan I had been following since age ten). Towards the end of my last year of middle school, I started my fashion blog, and ever since it's been one of the main focuses of my life. I took two more classes this past summer at FIT so I could learn how to sew and make patterns, and I've got two sewing machines and two mannequins in my forever-cluttered apartment. Every day at school, I do art for an hour and a half, and when I come home, I blog. I've got it all planned out: get an internship at a magazine or a brand, become discovered as a young talent, finish high school, go to college and take a semester or a year abroad in Paris, all while slowly building my own brand, so that by the time I'm 21, I've had it made. Is this unrealistic? Maybe a little. Is it normal for me to have my whole life planned out at age fourteen? No.

I definitely see the risks in having a plan such as mine. There are many, I'll tell you that much. The first problem that I face is that I'm overworking myself as a teenager. I look around me and see all my friends having a blast, just bein' kids. Then there's me, writing two articles a week for two different websites, updating my blog, reading magazines and drawing sketches during my free periods—that's actually just making me tired, thinking about it. I feel as though I'm missing out on experiencing the quintessential life of a teenager. But the conflict there is that if don't do all these things, my plan won't work. How do I expect to get an internship at Phillip Lim this summer if I haven't got any experience? This is the mind that I have to live with. I just keep piling things on because I think I'll have the time to do them, when I won't. I'll buy a new magazine when I've got ten more at home that I haven't so much as opened, or I'll begin a sewing endeavor that I'll give myself a week to complete, when in reality I won't start it until a month later. And then there's the other part of my brain, the non-fashion part, that wants me to be intelligent and well-rounded, that gives me all these additional dumb ideas. Here's a perfect example: the other day I was reading Jane Eyre, and the beautiful language used in the book made me think, “You know what would be great? Reading a dictionary.” I was dead serious. Consider yourselves lucky that you're not as crazy as I am.

You may be thinking, “What an ignorant little girl, thinking all her dreams will come true. She's in for a big shock when she grows up.” I'm fully aware that it's really difficult to make things happen the way you want them to. There are some people who work towards their dreams, and they make it. There are others who give up, and they don't get where they wanted to be. I think that if I try hard enough, it'll work out. I'm not like Monica from the television show “Friends,” who flips out if things don't go according to plan. I'm okay with getting somewhere the roundabout way, as long as I make it there eventually. I feel like you're still skeptical. I can prove to you that there are some determined people out there that are successful in the fashion industry at a young age. Let's bring up Alexander Wang. He launched his first full womenswear collection at age 24 after moving to New York from California to attend Parsons and dropping out his sophomore year. “Alexander Wang” is now a household name (depending on what household you're in), and he's only 27. Here's another example: Alexander McQueen, a legend at age 40. Those are some pretty young guys. People tend to think others that are younger than them to be inferior, but in the words of Haemon, from Sophocles' Antigone, “If am young, do not look at my years but what I do.” In the fashion industry, it's less about how old you are and more about how talented you are. When I sent out emails to different brands to see if they'd let me into their shows during New York Fashion Week, I told them how old I was, and I actually got to attend a show. Nowadays, everything is more accessible because of technology and the internet and such things that there are so many doors just waiting to be opened. There's no excuse for someone like me not to try to succeed, if this is really what I want to do. But that last phrase right there brings me to my final problem. How am I to know if this is really what I want to do?

Let's just say I follow my little procedure and nothing goes wrong (yeah, right). Let's skip ahead in the future to when I'm at the end of my plan, at age 21. What if somewhere along the way I discover that I want to be doing something else? My English teacher told us that for years, her dream was to be a journalist, and she succeeded in fulfilling her dream. One day she realized that she didn't want to do it anymore, and became a high school English teacher, the one thing she was sure she would never be when she was in high school. That scares me a little. Does that mean that I'll become an accountant? If so, let me correct my previous statement: that scares me a lot. The wonderful thing about fashion is that everyone is a hybrid of a few different things. There's blogger-designers, model-filmmakers, even the doctor-blogger-model-who-designs-jewelry-in-her-free-time-ers. Right now, I can't really see myself doing anything else, but if it came down to it, I know for a fact that I won't be going in the opposite direction and suddenly want to become a mathematician, or a biochemist, or a poet. There's just a certain beauty in clothing and art that I can never get over, because it's always changing. There's always something new. I get bored easily, so maybe that's why I could never work with something that's always the same. If I change my focus, chances are fashion is one step ahead of me and has already changed itself.

Trending Next Spring: Peek-A-Boo

You may remember this cut-out shirt that I wore that day after I cut my hair short (!!). Little did I know that cut-outs on clothing was soon to be a big trend. We all recognize this shirt from Urban Outfitters because everyone seems to have it, so if you've not jumped on the bandwagon yet, here's your chance! Spring 2012: the season of opportunity.

The thing about cut-out garments is that they can be provocative depending on where these holes are placed, or they can just be straight up cool. Peek-a-boos are the equivalent of sheers, sex appeal-wise, in my opinion. That means that the trend can go a few separate ways, which seems to be a recurring theme here. FASHION IS ALL ABOUT CHOICE, PEOPLE. You gotta "make it work" for you (credz to Tim Gunn for the quote).

A variety of designers have joined the cut-out craze, so take a sneak peak(-a-boo) at how they rocked it on the runway.

Be a sexy chick:

                             Haider Ackermann                                                                Vera Wang

                              Tommy Hilfiger                                                                      Versace

                                  Vera Wang                                                                       Dolce & Gabbana

Be a kool kat:

                                     Carven                                                                         Alexander McQueen
                                     Lanvin                                                                             Rebecca Minkoff

                                     Carven                                                                                  Fendi
                                     Carven                                                                                  Jen Kao

See how many possibilities there are here? I'm thinking of DIY-ing a few old things, perhaps, to replicate some of that Carven goodness that you witnessed up above. Mmm.

Just a few quick updates:
Yesterday my mom and I had a bit of girls' night out (GNO, if you will). This entailed eating frozen yogurt (Red Mango, my faves) getting manicures, and then heading to Macy's for the Veteran's Day sale. I now have bordeaux-colored fingernails, 3 new pairs of tights (one of which is wine-colored as well, one of which is ribbed and white and one of which is black with a cool squiggle design) and an owl ring to match my Italian owl necklace (which I wore here). The only thing left to get are some new jeans, which I will buy today at Buffalo Exchange, hopefully. That place is totally rad. Thanks to my friend Ben for introducing it to me. (They had a pair of Doc Martens for $28 there earlier this week--it doesn't get any better than that.)

There are some nice sales this weekend, buy new goodies while they're cheap!
