Trending For Pre-Fall: Ebony and Ivory

Welcome back, everyone, to my infamous trend reports. It's been a while. Too long, if you ask me. Let's not dillydally and just jump right into it. Pre-fall is a non-season entirely, but people pretend that it is. It's just an excuse for designers to have another show/lookbook and for incessant shoppers to justify buying clothes in July that they will supposedly "need" in a few months' time. I don't really see the point, but I shall cover the trends nonetheless. Pre-fall is obviously a precursor to fall, so expect to see some repetition in these posts over the next few months. Oopsies. This weird in-between season is just screwing everything up, am I right?

First trend for the season: black and white. Ebony and ivory (live together in perfect harmony, side by side on my piano keyboard oh lord why don't we?), if you're familiar with the "Psych" commercial. Let's play a little game. I say "black and white," you think:

1. Dalmatians (one hundred and one of them, perhaps?)
3. Film photographs from the good ol' days
4. "The Wizard of Oz," since it was the first color motion picture <--maybe this one is a little obscure
5. Math (that's probably just me)

Black and white are technically not colors--I believe they are hues, or the absence and presence of light in a pigment. So when you stick 'em together, the effect is graphic, bold, and striking. Most people see the combination as classic or typical and tend to shy away from it because they think it's boring. This season's designs prove that mindset to be straight up wrong. There is nothing monotonous about these garments, despite how monochromatic they are. In order to get the right contrast, you need to make sure your black and white pieces are in their purest shades. As long as that stays constant, the juxtaposition doesn't matter--layer that shiz up the wazoo or go crazy (or not) with some colorblocking. If you do choose to colorblock, simplicity is key. You can use solid colors or prints to achieve both looks.

No matter what color your skin is or how tall you are or how big your feet are or how long your fingernails are, you can pull off this trend. All you have to do is keep the above rules in mind (or not, fashion ain't got no rulez) and wear minimal accessories and makeup to let the clothes speak for themselves.

                                Donna Karan                                                              3.1 Phillip Lim

                                  J. Mendel                                                          T by Alexander Wang

Kick-punch combo:

                                       Acne                                                                 Alexander McQueen

                              Alexander Wang                                                             Jason Wu

                               Band of Outsiders                                                            Chanel

                                     Doo.Ri                                                                 Alexander Wang

Michael Kors                                                           Oscar de la Renta

This is the trend to experiment with. Try prints! Try solids! Layer! Explore new textures! Leather? Yes! Wool? Yes! Fur? Yes! Silk? Yes! All four together? Yes! ...Maybe! Have I overused the exclamation point so that it no longer carries any extra meaning? Yes!

Oh, it's so good to be back. I love doing this stuff.

I recently deleted my personal Facebook account, so if you were one of those people that used to get to my blog from my own page, I'd appreciate if you "liked" this blog's page so you can stay in the loop. I don't wanna be losing readers just because I wanted more time to blog. That would be all backwards. CLICK THESE BIG WORDS to like YOU'RE A TULLE ON FACEBOOK, if you would be so kind.
