Bang Bang

Last Wednesday, I was invited by OMEN PR to attend the opening for the tattoo artist Bang Bang's new shop in the Lower East Side. Even though Bang Bang is only 27, he's already tattooed Rihanna, the Biebz, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Russell Brand, Cara Delevingne, and lots of basketball players whose names I don't really know. That's pretty freaking amazing for someone so young. That's a lot of famous skin.

The event was part grand opening, party charity function; lining the wall in the front room were framed and signed kisses from some of Bang Bang's celebrity clientele. There's an auction being held for these framed kisses, with the option for the winners to get the lips inked onto their own body. The money raised is going to a local animal rescue organization, Animal Haven and Empty Cages Collective. Art, tattoos, loud music, nice/well-dressed people, and good deeds: what more can you ask for on a Wednesday night?

I really dig the idea of tattoos, I actually may get one/more than one someday, but I hate needles so I'd probably have to be heavily sedated in order to go through with it. I'd want something really dainty and cute and sophisticated. I have a tall order, whatever.

I was able to bring along Alina, so her and I dressed up in our Wednesday night best and went out on the town. After a while, our bodies began crumbling from the stress of high heels (okay fine, just Alina, I'm not brave enough to wear high heels) so we had to leave and wait for our mommies in a Burger King down the street, but that was a stupid mistake because apparently Rihanna showed up later. Of course.

The lips of a famous person on paper!

More lips! (Katy Perry?)

J. Biebs drew a silly little mouth cuz he's silly

Peep me and Alina on the far right!

That's me and her again!!

Bang Bang with Rihanna, likely moments after we left, because I have terrible luck and the stars hate me.

OMEN PR also sent me to a fashion show that I will report on soon, as well as another party that I ended up not being able to go to, but I was honored to be invited anyway.

I apologize for the boringness of my writing this morning, school starts tomorrow and I can already feel the life being sucked out of me.

Miu Miu x2

The other night, Alina and I went to a pre-Fashion Week party for the tattoo artist Bang Bang (more to come on the event later), and funnily enough, her and I both wore outfits inspired by different Miu Miu seasons.

The Secret Life of Mud

The day finally came. This past Saturday, I went to Governor's Ball. There are another two blog posts dedicated to the actual event coming up in the near future, but in this one I'm just gonna focus on what me and my quasi-date Alina wore.

Festival fashion is kind of like, a big deal. The fact that there's a certain class of trends dedicated to what people wear to music festivals is telling enough. Since it was hella hot out, most of the ladies were wearing some semblance of shorts and bustiers/bra tops à la the spring 2013 shows. A few women were just wearing straight up bras. Props to them. About one-third of the people had been there on Friday and lived through the rain and knew to wear rain boots. The rest of us were wearing anything but rain boots. Alina was wearing jelly shoes and some people were wearing canvas shoes or flip flops or nothing suitable for mud. I was luckily wearing my hiking boots, but by the end of the day they were just blocks of mud that I was dragging around. I had to hose those puppies down well, but I still feel like there's going to be a little farm inside those shoes forever more.

I decided to take an alternate route in terms of what I wore. The road less traveled by, if you will. I wore my mom's maternity dress, wrapped a weird black and white flower choker around my neck, put my hair in lil dumplings, got on my Timbs (that's Timberlands for those that don't understand abbreviations), and put a temporary tattoo of a sun on my chest. Alina also wore a dress, a tent dress of sorts from Topshop, with her pink jelly shoes. She had to take them off and walk barefoot because the mud was too slippery. She stepped on a helluva lot of smushed beer cans.

Enough talking, you must now look.

[Photos of me by Olive; photos of Alina by me.]

Dress: my mom's maternity dress
Boots: Timberlands
Choker: shared by me and my sister, from the baby years
Watch: present from my mom

Just hangin' in the mud.

This is the point at which I became a puppy.

Dancing prep. Gotta keep the machine well-oiled, ya know?

Dress: Topshop
Belt: yo idk this ain't my wardrobe
Choker: on loan from me
Temporary tattoo: probably Claire's....

Baby Alina, bein' cayute.

Costume change!

Overalls: Forever 21
Bustier: Topshop
Backpack: Topshop
Mud: courtesy of the stupid effin' weather

The next installment in this series will be about the music and the bands I saw. Despite the mud and the heat, EVERYTHING ROCKED. I was jamming out so hard and I was in my main element. Plus my hair was up in dumplings, so everything was perfect.

Also, today was my last day of school. THANK GOD THANK GOD THANK GOD THANK GOD I'M DONE I MADE IT IT'S OVER HOLY EFF. I can't believe I made it. And that was only 10th grade. ...Fuq.....

Ashish And His Sequins

Ashish Gupta is a genius. Or a madman. Or likely both. I think to an extent madness and genius are directly proportional. Whatever Ashish is, it's awesome and I love it and he should never stop being that thing. I happened upon his eponymous brand around a year ago and felt like crying and doing a little jig when I saw his Spring/Summer 2012 collection. It was a perfect combination of flowers and cowgirls and braids and sequins. And when one combines those four items gracefully--nay, MAGNIFICENTLY--said person clearly has a great deal of talent and should be showered with rose petals and chocolate chip muffins every morning.

There isn't a whole lot of info on the designer himself on the Infinite Internet, but I did find a short interview he did with the people at London Fashion Week. He began his line in 2005, interweaving pop culture references and product placement between his messily glamourous clothing right from the get-go. Ashish has been quoted saying that his signature design focal points are, "Sequins, glamour, sportswear, and more sequins."Basically, SEQUINS. He sometimes uses them subtly as small accents, he sometimes dunks the models in bowls of sequins and sends them on the runway, he sometimes loads Nerf guns with sequins and goes on midnight panty raids thus armed. (Disclaimer: nothing I just said is true at all.)

Ashish gathers inspiration from the cinematic world and pop culture, as well as Tumblr. He thinks Tumblr is fascinating because of how it gathers inspiration and information from millions of people worldwide. He calls it an "ever-evolving giant scrapbook of ideas." That's one way of putting it.

The thing I love about Ashish is how endlessly funky and fearless it is. Whoever's wearing his clothes obviously does not give a flying fuq about what other people think of them, which I think is highly admirable. Good for them, and good for Ashish for promoting such intense awesomeness.

You should check out all his collections on his website, I promise promise promise you will not regret it.

Now I want to destroy all my old pairs of jeans and create a patchwork jumpsuit. Actually, I think I'm going to go do that. Like, right now.

P.S. Alina and I are going to Governor's Ball this Saturday (along with a bunch of other Can I Have Your Closet veterans, like Octavia and Olive) so I'm definitely going to post about that once I've recovered from the psychedelic experience. We're seeing Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros (aka the one band in the entire world that I would follow around the world if I had the funds/means), Animal Collective, and Dirty Projectors, among others. My excitement is ova-flowin'.

Can I Have Your Closet: Alina Peña

Alina Peña is a rock and roll fairy. I think that's the most succinct way to describe her. I met her in my gym class, a class notorious for its fashion-diminishing quality. However, Alina is capable of dressing like a cool-as-fuq chick even when we're sweating and awkward in the uncomfortable environment that is a high school physical education course. From the first day I saw her, wearing her over-sized, high-waisted sweatpants, funky t-shirts, and old-skewl sneakers, I knew we had to be friends. And it turns out she's just as awesome as her clothes proclaim her to be. She's a fellow passive aggressive feminist and Rookie lover, as well as having her own unique thangs that she does. She makes zines, terrariums, and pins, and has the most amusing Tumblr I've ever seen. She always has what is seemingly fairy dust sprinkled delicately across her cheekbones. But most importantly, she has her own unique style that is just so Alina, but at the same time so difficult to pin point. Basically, she can rock everything, and totally will if given the chance. Without further ado, I present to you, Miss Alina.

Odelia: How would you describe your style?
Alina: I knew you were gonna ask this! It's kind of a bit of an adventure 'cause I can't make any decisions whatsoever, it's just kind of an emotional roller coaster when I try and answer that question. But I don't know, it depends on the day. Sometimes I wanna be a go-go girl, sometimes I wanna be a rockabilly rebel, it just depends.
Odelia: Who are your fashion icons and who do you admire aesthetically?
Alina: Tavi Gevinson and Petra Collins are my queens, but I don't really know people, it's really bad. It's usually just old children's books, art deco children's books that I read, or photos from the sixties that I see on Pinterest and other pretentious things like that that usually are inspiring.
Odelia: Where are your favorite places to shop?
Alina: I was asking myself this the other day, 'cause I have a lot of clothing, and I don't know where it comes from! When it's me, myself, and I, it's usually just thrift stores, and the Salvation Army, and things like that, or vintage shops, but my mom does a lot of shopping for me, 'cause she's really good at that. She gets all these emails with coupons and goes back to stores to see if things are on sale, yeah. And it's all from, like, Century 21, and it all rocks. She does a lot of shopping for me.
Odelia: If you could own one or more items right now that you don't have, what would it or they be?
Alina: Ugh, I feel like I should name drop something! I really want this jacket I saw on Etsy that's red, white, and blue, and it says “Love” on the back, and it's all fringe, and it's really wild with like, hearts on it. I also want some pins. I just wanna be the kind of person that has pins all over their chest, on your butt, like, anywhere. Pins on my face. I just want lots of broaches. It's mostly pins, but then a few bug broaches here and there.
Odelia: Would you say that fashion is a big focus in your life?
Alina: Jesus Christ, yeah. It's a problem.
Odelia: How would you describe personal style as a concept?
Alina: Personal style as a concept?
Odelia: Like what does it mean to you.
Alina: I think it's just all of the inspiration that you gobble up and spit up however you like. It can change as much as you want, you don't really have to be pinned down, that's why it's so difficult to talk about, I guess.
Odelia: How do you feel that high school has influenced your sartorial choices?
Alina: I've always cared way too much about how I dress, but have always kind of been on-trend whether I want to or not. But I guess it's kinda pushed me a lot because people are super crazy fashionable in high school, and I'm so defensive about it, I feel like I have to be the best. It's been a good motivator.
Odelia: But there's also a lot of people that are really nastily dressed. It's kind of disheartening.
Alina: Yeah, that's true. I don't mind it too much.
Odelia: I'm that person that gets angry.
Alina: I don't know, it depends. It honestly depends. If I really hate it [the outfit], or I have something against the person, then I'll criticize them for it, and if I like them, I'll be like, “She can do whatever she wants, it doesn't matter, don't judge her!” So, I don't know. I don't really mind either way, as long as I feel like I look good! [Laughs]
Odelia: Okay, I'm throwing in a bonus question in reference to your scene days, but not really. Do you feel like your style evolves frequently, or is there a core Alina thing?
Alina: No, it changes all the time. It's so difficult for my mother when she wants to buy me things for Christmas 'cause she doesn't know what I'm into anymore. I mean, I'll get nostalgic for things I had when I was five, but there's not much holding it together other than, I guess, being really quirky. I guess that's a really core part of me. But otherwise I'm all over the goddamn map.
Odelia: Is there anything else you want to say?
Alina: Uh, I wanna be you when I grow up. [Laughs]
Odelia: This is funny, because she's older than me. So it's physically impossible.
Alina: [Makes kissy face at camera]

Look at that magic. She really is shimmering.

I learned all about the pure genius of layering tights from Alina.

She and our friend Julianne wear their Growlers pins erryday. They're just big Growlers fans, I guess.

Her bangs were probably the best decision she's ever made. Not many people can rock the midi-bangs (half way between micro bangs and regular bangs), except maybe Alina, Rooney Mara, and Tavi Gevinson. All of this Googling of bangs has made me really want to get bangs again, but make them midi-length this time. Please do all that is in your power to talk me out of this. I will regret it. So much.

What even is this pattern??? Pastel fairy vomit??

Whadda shmerp.

This fancy lady is supercute and quite fashionable. Nothin' you didn't already know.

There may be a few weeks in between this "Can I Have Your Closet" and the next one, seeing as I don't have any lined up as of this moment. However, I have a few subjects in mind, so don't think this segment is going on a massive hiatus the way it did last time. Also, there will be more Fashion Week coverage coming your way as soon as I can find the time to write things up, plus there's a bunch of fancy projects going on behind da scenes here. Stay tuned! (I never really understood that phrase, because it literally means to adjust to the frequency of a required signal, so it doesn't even make sense in a television or radio context nowadays.)

A Convergence

Sometimes I have the irrepressible urge to dress like a gypsy princess. I also sometimes have the nagging desire to dress like a fancy business lay-dee. Sometimes, the two converge in a yellow wood  (I know it's actually "diverged" but it was too good to pass up) and I have no choice but to live by the wise words of Oscar Wilde and yield to my temptation. Below you shall see the result of such an undertaking.

Top: gift from my aunt in France
Pants: unknown
Denim jacket: Gap (embroidered by me)
Scarf: pashmina from my grandma
Plaid jacket: Outerwear (I got it at the flea market at Vassar where I also got that pink tweed jacket, which funnily enough I wore with these pants)
Shoes: Christian Siriano for Payless

In the words of the photographer for this post: "boobies!"

I'm just glad that my little midriff there didn't get frostbite or nothin'. I'd say that's something to smile about. Also Alina may have been making a particularly ridiculous face.

Peep the hand-knitted mittens, made by me, circa third grade. I had a knitting business from fourth through sixth grades. I'll give you the link so you can have a good long laugh. This is it.

I wore this outfit to the Clover Canyon show on Wednesday, February 13, in case anyone was wondering.

Does Thursday remind anyone else of pretzels?
