Trending Next Spring: Clichés Galore

What is the most cliché thing you can think of when, well, thinking about spring? Flowers. April showers bring May flowers, don't they? (Déjà vu!!) Mother Nature is a bipolar ho, so I wouldn't count on that one this year, but let's say that hypothetically, pansies and marigolds and dandelions will appear. What an oddball assortment of flowers. Speaking of flowers (say it one more time, why don't you), I recently began reading The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, and it's gotten me in the mood for gardening. I'm not that much of a nature-y gal, but the thought of digging up dirt and throwing it at people and working in the hot sun for a day seems like a blast. What have I become? That's a good question. I've got another great question for you coming at the very, very end of this post, so stay tuned. You don't wanna miss it.

I'm sure I could fill an entire blog (yes, not just a post, a blog unto itself) of pictures of floral accessories, but I've chosen just a few to show you today. As in I borrowed them from the Harper's Bazaar website; what's new? To answer my own rhetorical question, spring break has officially begun today, and I am pumped. I woke up before 9 am for absolutely no reason and have caught up on reading three-quarters of the blogs I follow, so I am filled to the brim with inspiration. Maybe that's why this post is just flowin' out mah phalanges. I do apologize for the lack of posting/lack of fun on this blog within the past few weeks. I'm pretty sure that every time I swipe my I.D. card to get into my school building they drain a little bit of my soul. The scary dean/lunch monitor/he probably doesn't have an actual job guy probably has it stored in a secret box and he's planning to use it to make horcruxes.

I realize that this post is just a mish-mash-mosh-mush of thoughts on my mind, so I hope that the frenetic energy emanating from this blog is not making you paranoid. How about I zip my lips and get the show on the road? (Speaking of clichés...see the previous sentence.)

Before I shut up, I'd just like to mention that for a full-on floral effect, why not pair these accessories with your flowery garments? The real question here is why not?

Alexander McQueen

If you're into not being able to walk, this is exactly what pair of shoes you should be wearing. Also if you like defying gravity.

Peter Pilotto

Reminiscent of Betty Spaghetty. Yellow lucite (?) cylinder heel. Shiny candy flowers. Red Robin Yummm!

Prada

Pradadadada! Nice crotch shot ya got there, Harper's Bazaar. Cute. Let's refocus our attention to the bag that is making a comeback: the clutch. See how the Man Repeller diagnosed this dynamite idea here.

Rochas

Flowers that look like sea urchins and coral growing out of your feet: a must-have for spring. That crazy mosaic-but-not-really heel is quite a fancy touch. Things that they should have checked on before letting this model wear these shoes: her shoe size.

Ashish

I believe that this is the most literal (and by far my favorite) floral usage for spring and forever. Stick real live flowers in your shoes and walk around like you own da place. "I can grow plants out of my feet, come at me bitchez." Yeah. You can also totally do this without buying anything--except flowers--by stuffing them in your Doc Martens or any other boots you've got. I promise that I am trying this out this spring/summer, so you better hold me to that. I never actually had yellow finger nails this winter like I said I would. Oops.
P.S. Might I recommend checking out all of Ashish's (say that one out loud in public) spring 2012 collection? It's quite a beauty.

I feel like I should change the title of this post to "Trending Right Now," because technically spring is, well, right now. I'm not lying to you about next spring's trends, I swear. Just tryin' to keep things consistent. I love me some consistency. That was a confusing sentence.

So, you like snails?

CHICTOPIA SNEAK PEEK! New Names To Know

Well hellooooo y'all! Tomorrow is my last day of school until April break...I'm so freaking pumped. I am so tired and so done with school; it's time fo' some chillin'. Anoué, here a little snippet of this week's Chictopia article!

I love wordplay (see the title—alliteration for the win!).

Last week, I had the privilege of attending a private press viewing for the fall 2012 collections of Alice Yim, Stella & Jamie, Amber Sakai, Johanna Johnson and Lemaresca. It was a terribly windy day in late March, one of those days that would cause someone to like this Facebook page upon their arrival home. I was a little worried that I’d look like a disheveled hobo once I finally reached my destination, seeing as I got a little turned around. Lower Manhattan is a confusing place.

I entered a small room on the 8th floor of really nice building and was greeted by an awesome woman named Raphie. The tiny space was occupied by four racks of clothing and a table covered in spiffy handbags and accessories. I pulled out my camera and notepad and was presently guided through each of the four collections. I will now recount the information bestowed upon me to you, my dear readers. You’re welcome.

Can I Have Your Closet: Sadie Heisler

Sadie Heisler is one of those really cool chicks that you see and you're like, "She's probably really cool." And then you talk to her, and she is really cool. (I apologize for the redundancy, I was just trying to make a point. I hope you got which point I was making. It's that Sadie's really cool, in case you missed it the first three times.) I've known Sadie since 4th grade because she was friends with my sister. Of course, she's changed quite a bit since I first met her, but she's still the same hilarious, sweet and adorable girl at heart, just much more well-dressed. That's why you're reading about her, isn't it? Byeah!

Sadie has that chill oh-I-just-threw-this-on-this-is-nothing vibe with her clothes. Maybe it's the beat up white Converse (remember them from this post?), or the cuffed jeans, or the cute childhood t-shirts, or the rolled up short sleeves...You know what, it's probably just a big yummy Sadie salad of all those things. Try to picture that mental image in a friendly and non-graphic way. There's a certain amount of playfulness and nonchalance in her style that's totally incredible, and I try to emulate it, but it doesn't really work as well for me. Actually, ever since I started seeing her every day in math class, she's become a huge source of inspiration for me. She probably had no idea until right now, but it's certainly true. The cuffed pants thing? Taken from Sadie (and Caroline). Rolled up sleeves? Also them. Wearing t-shirts from my young'un years? All Sadie.  If you're reading this, Sadie, thank you and I'll see you in geometry tomorrow.

Despite the fact that she was kind of nervous for our interview, you can find out a lot of the fun details about Sadie by reading the following interview.

Odelia: How would you describe your style?
Sadie: Relaxed, urban-y...I kind of, I don't know, exactly...Yeah, casual.
Odelia: Who are your fashion icons and who do you admire aesthetically?
Sadie: Oh yeah, comfy. I—mmm. I don't know that many people, so...I don't know. Icons, like in general, not like—
Odelia: It can be like a family member, or whoever, I don't know.
Sadie: Okay, well, I love my—my mom's style has changed over time, but all her clothes from before, like from a long time ago that she's kept..I can imagine the way she did wear them, that's sometimes how I wear my clothes. And I wear a lot of her clothes. I don't know, sometimes—this sounds silly but--sometimes I dress the way, like, to—you know how if you're listening to a song or something and you think of like, the way it sounds is how you'd—I don't know, but yeah. I guess that's it.
Odelia: Where are your favorite places to shop?
Sadie: Definitely there's a store that she [Caroline] said that's Second Time Around, that's near my house, that always has really cool stuff. I volunteer at Housing Works, and actually I go there and get a lot of stuff from there now, which is really cool. And places I wish I could shop are Agnès B., which is like, me and Caroline's favorite place ever. Then...where else...where do I go? I don't shop anymore, 'cause I have no money...where I used to shop...I guess that's about it. Wow, I'm giving really un-descriptive answers! [Laughs]
Odelia: If you could own one item right now that you don't have, what would it be?
Sadie: Let's see. Shoes are like, my favorite thing ever, even though I wear these shoes every single day, but I really, really want...damn, this is so hard! I know so many things that I ask for, like think to myself that I want really bad every single day but I can't think of any of them now. I kind of want...damn it! [Laughs] Oh! I want some sandals that are plain leather, tan, light tan leather, strappy...Then I want...I want so many things! There's a lot of bags in the world that I want right now, I can't even think of them. Oh! I saw this thing in a magazine that I really want. It's not an article of clothing, but it goes on your ear, like a cuff, but it's not an actual piercing. I really want one of those.
Odelia: Last question: would you say that fashion is a big focus in your life?
Sadie: I don't know a lot about the fashion in the world, like about all the stuff that's going on, but I'd say that style is important to me.

She's just so cute! Peep the friendship bracelets on her wrists; she's so unknowingly on trend.

I love how basic her clothing is, but with just a few original details here and there, Sadie makes even the simplest ensembles all her own. Snaps for her!

This is a freaking amazing scarf. Caroline was calling out from the sidelines, "Show her your scarf!" and Sadie was like, "Yeah, it's pretty cool, I guess." I think she meant to say amazing and perfect.

The famous rolled up jeans and white Chuck Taylors combo. I now really want shoes like hers. Especially ones with laces long enough to wrap around my ankles. I think that's just the bees knees.

My favorite part about this photo is not Octavia creeping in the bottom left hand corner, but Sadie's smiley face hair clip. That's the lighthearted and humorous part of her style that I love oh so much.

I don't know about you, but I'm feelin' inspired.

Clueless

I thought of titling this post something like, "As If!" but I decided that I should be straightforward for once. Here's the dillz: I watched the movie "Clueless" the other night with Octavia and Elly, and there's absolutely no way that someone can see that movie without being ridiculously inspired to wear mini-skirt dress suits in mustard yellow against her better judgement. Filmed in 1995, it is the quintessential '90s movie, portraying the most outrageous and bizarre fashions of the decade. I don't know if you remember when I posted about "Pretty in Pink" over the summer, but since I'm an even bigger fan of the 1990s than of the '80s, I feel like this post is even more inspiring, if it's possible. Regardless, you need to see both movies. Right now. And...GO! Except for don't actually leave yet, you need to look at these pictures. 'Kay thankz.

This was of course not my first time seeing "Clueless," but I think I appreciated it the most this time. I totally love Paul Rudd (he smiled and waved at me once! I almost died), Alicia Silverstone and Brittany Murphy are hilarious and whenever I see Donald Faison I think immediately of Turk from "Scrubs." I paid serious attention to the clothing this time, though, so if you go to school with me, expect some of the influence to show through. Maybe. Dressing like you're from the '90s is tricky stuff, if you're not really in the '90s. People judge you. A lot.

If you've never seen this movie and can't imagine these outfits I'm referring to, take a gander at the photos below. You shan't regret it.

Photos via Tumblr. <--Do not judge me, it's just the easiest place to get pictures of obscure things.

Tai Fraiser, the gal from New York. She's not a virgin, but we don't know if she can drive.

Cher Horowitz, rocking the cropped-sweater-over-button-up-shirt look à la Phillip Lim. Peep the color coordination. I love it.

Guys, I'm going to bring back berets. I've been thinking about it for a while, and it's about to happen. Get ready. Also, note Dionne's cray-cray hat. Gotta give D some props for courage.

She is beautiful. I want her hair. And her eyes (we noticed that everyone in this movie has beautiful eyes; they're either green or blue or gray or yellow...what is this madness??!!) And her wardrobe. Like, so badly.

I actually have a dress that looks like Dionne's--vintage Nicole Miller. I'm whippin' that baby out for sure now.

"OH MY GAWD CHER!" That's probably what Tai was saying. She had this great New York accent.

Da cast! Not sure what's in D's hair, or where Josh (Paul Rudd) is going.

Aww shux, ain't she just the cutest thang you e'er saw?

Not gonna lie, I'm not really sure what is on Cher's head. This was most definitely not in the movie.

Murray and Dionne: the funniest couple ever. Things to take note of: Floral crop cop, crazy shiz in D's hair, nose ring and the backwards cap on Murray. Oh so '90s.

The phone really does it for me.

The color/pattern coordination and knee-high socks really are the give away that these girls are not from this century. Maybe I'll start matching my outfits like this? It's a spring 2012 trend, isn't it? HEY! I bet the designers all had a huge sleepover and watched "Clueless" and were all inspired to do the matchy-matchy suits thing. That's definitely what happened.

Always shopping.

Sheer shirts are also making a comeback this season. I'm tellin' ya, the 90's are having a massive moment right now.

This movie is so wonderful--I feel like my whole wardrobe is going to go through a shift now. As soon as I have the things on my wishlist, I'll basically be a new person! But not really. Just a person with better clothes. Now if I could just find the funding for this little project of mine...#whitegirlproblems

In other news, on Thursday I was alerted that I won the Tuco x Jean Greige giveaway and I'm receiving a t-shirt that says "You're So Vain" on it, but the letters are backwards so it's like you're looking in a mirror. Geddit? Vain, mirror? I think it's terribly clever, and I'm not one to wear t-shirts. I have a feeling the two of us will become good friends very quickly. That's my second free shirt in one week (I'll explain on Tuesday)--I'm on a roll here! (Rollin' with the homies! That's a "Clueless" reference, just btdubz. One of the best quotes if I do say so myself.)

I apologize for the long amount of time that passed between this post and the last post; I've been so tired and busy and lazy and procrastinational (new word! Add it to da lexicon!) that I haven't even kept up with the blogs that I read or done much physical movement. That's how you know I'm seriously having issues. I should be restored to (nearly) full health soon, hopefully, because spring break begins at the end of this coming week. Thank the Lord! Except that as soon as break begins, I can't eat bread or anything like that the entire time. Some vacation that is.

Just...a few more...days...I can...endure......
