Ballet Meets Russian Philosophy (Clover Canyon Fall 2013)

It would seem that excess and maximalism is a trend of sorts for Fall 2013. It was a huge part of the alice + olivia collection, and when I saw the Clover Canyon show two days later, there it was in all its bedazzled glory yet again.

The show notes gave an ample picture of what the creative team at Clover Canyon was aiming for (and achieved). Their inspiration this season was Russia, calling on its "extreme luxury...extreme passion" and "radical, maximal aesthetics." You'll see in a minute how accurate all of this is. Some of the models were attired in pointe shoes--heavily bejeweled, of course--and went up on pointe every few minutes for the entire hour-long presentation. I would classify that as extreme passion. Exhibiting dedication wasn't exactly the point (no pun intended) of including the ballerina-models. Clover Canyon didn't just use Russia as an excuse to throw gems on everything they saw, they used it as a reference point for the collection by gathering inspiration from the "opulence of The Hermitage" and the Constructivism movement that began in Russia around the time of the Bolshevik Revolution and the end of World War I. Everything from the grace of the Russian ballerinas to the Siberian plains was used in this collection.

What really struck me, though, were the questions posed at the end of the show notes. These were ideas that had not been brought up with the alice + olivia collection, but touched upon a different concept entirely: "Can there ever be too much beauty? Or too much love?"

I'd give you a whole long answer if I could, but I think that's one I'd have to mull over for quite some time. Discuss it amongst yourselves (comments section, anybody?). Let's reconvene in T minus 54 hours and share our findings. (Side note: I just understood the whole T minus thing; T is the variable, standing for 'time.' This is exciting.)

[Photos (and the special surprise at the end) by me.]

I don't think there's anything more excessive than bedazzled pointe shoes.

One thing's for sure: there can never be too much texture.

The crazy thing is that this pattern that looks like a chandelier hanging from her body is actually just printed on the dress! Not a real chandelier! My mom was a little shocked by this news.

The sweatshirt says "Clover Canyon" in Russian.
And I'd wear those pants any day.

You'd think the (faux) fur would be the luxurious part of this ensemble. But the gold embroidering on the collar and the print of the jacket are competing with it in the best way possible.

The corner of ballerinas!

Clover Canyon treats prints as neutrals.

She was so cute that I couldn't not include her here.

This is probably the most awkward picture I have ever taken.

I guess I'm not the only one that likes dressing like a box.

Those are some good Friday night disco jammin' pants. And everybody needs a pair of decent Friday night disco jammin' pants.

Short dresses with long sleeves are really, really elegant. I need to get me one o' those.

The special surprise at the end of which I spoke! She was dancing so I took a million pictures and I later discovered that it looked like she was actually dancing in my photos --> GIF is made.

It took me long enough to get all of my NYFW stuff covered (it ended over a month ago). Thankfully, meaning THANK THE FUQIN HOLY BEJEEZUS, I am on spring break now and I have about ten days of freedom. Five of these days include going to Harry Potter world. Basically all my dreams are coming true. I really am going back to Hogwarts.

Warby Parker + My Face

I was one of those weird kids that always wanted glasses when I was little. I wanted glasses and braces because someone in a book I'd read had them, and I apparently admired this character, and thus I begged my mother to grant me the opportunity to, essentially, be ridiculed by my peers. Luckily, I've never had to get glasses (20-20 vision, y'all), but I've always wondered what I would look like if I did wear them. The answer is: very different. My mother tells me I look like an intellectual when I put on glasses, which leads me to assume that she thinks I don't usually look like an intellectual. Thanks, mom.

Enter Warby Parker. No, that is not a stage direction. (Buhdum, chh.) For those of you that are unaware of what Warby Parker means, it is the name of a glasses company that so generously offered to do a collaboration with me. Now, this is generally a fairly autonomous site in that I write things by myself for this blog (with the occasional article on the Huffington Post or elsewhere), so it took a lot of thought and contemplation and internal discussion to reach the conclusion that collaborating with these folks would be a great thing to do.

There were a few things that definitely helped weigh the scales in Warby Parker's favor. The first was that Lola's glasses are from them, and presumably the rest of her family's are as well. The second thing is that their frames rock. Glasses are an accessory, and ones that go on your face, a.k.a. the vehicle for your thoughts when they are manifested verbally, so I'd say choosing the right glasses is one of the most important decisions you have to make in your lifetime. If you select the wrong ones, your brain and the rest of your body are automatically judged on par with your frames. Conversely, if you choose fantastic ones, there's suddenly something about you that people are drawn to. You may not be saying anything different, but it's those glasses, man. Those of us with only two eyes have to rely more on our hair, I think, which is highly unfortunate for me because I have no patience with my hair. I kind of dread washing it because I know that it's just going to do whatever it wants and often it is angry and does not do good things. Except for when it makes itself into very nice, beauty-pageant curls as you can see below. But I digress.

The third thing that convinced me that Warby Parker is A-OK is that whilst perusing their website, I came upon the section that gives a bit of background on the company's name. I was curious to find out what significance it holds, because it's a pretty funky name, and that is coming from someone with a pretty funky name. It turns out that the four guys that created the company are big fans of the American novelist (who also currently holds the occupation of acting as my computer background), poet, jazz-music-digger, lover of love, Zen Buddhist (can you tell that I'm in love him yet? Because I am), and beautiful man Jack Kerouac. It turns out that two characters from some of his earliest works had the names Zagg Parker and Warby Pepper (he came up with the best names. Dean Moriarty? Mardou Fox? He should've had a million children just to give them all great names), so they chose their favorites from each person and came up with Warby Parker. Seeing as I am such an avid fan of monsieur Kerouac (did I mention that he was fluent in French?), it only made sense, based on the mathematically sound transitive property, that I should be an avid fan of Warby Parker. And whaddya know, I guess I am.

I selected five of my favorite pairs of glasses off their site, took pictures of me wearing them, and now said pictures are here for public consumption. So now, public, consume them!

Sloan in Rum Cherry
My mom really liked these because she thought the color looked nice. Red is my favorite color in the Whole Wide World, so I couldn't argue with that. Though I will say that I think the bridge is a bit too thick for my eyebrows. Also, the scar on my nose is covered up by them, so I'd' probably choose a different pair were I to need glasses.

I like the size and shape of these, although my mom thinks I should stay away from round glasses on account of my big squishy cheeks and the roundness of my face. I obviously put a lot of stock into what my mother says (ya hear that, mom?). But I do think these Begleys are quite cute.

I liked these a bit more than the Begley pair, mostly because the outer corners turn up instead of down, and I've always wanted a pair of cat-eye glasses like the ones that freaky suburban librarians mythically wear. Also, burgundy is a shade of red, so...

These were my mom's favorites; she said I looked the most intellectual in these. I can't say I necessarily agree with her. I tend to lean towards more rounded silhouettes, but maybe it's because my secret ambition is to look more like Harry Potter (hey, we have the same birthday, and I've got the scar on my nose which is kind of like Harry's scar) and Allen Ginsberg, or better yet, Harry Potter posing as Allen Ginsberg.

This last pair might be my favorite. They're round, they don't turn down too much at the edges, and the color is not too obtrusive and loud. Also, Percy Weasley! I don't know what my sudden obsession with Harry Potter is (again), but it's hit me full force tonight. I kinda dig it.

Welp, that's what I'd look like in glasses. You better call me Four Eye-delia.

On second thought, you better not.

Now it's your turn (I feel like I'm Steve on Blues Clues saying that). You can order five pairs of frames for free that you can hold onto for five days before you have to send them back. That way you can try them on in the comfort of your home without having to contend with other people seeing you if you end up looking like a frightening bug! If you're in need of a second pair of eyes, I'd say this is the place to take care of that.

Inspired By A Human: Willow Smith

I suspect that you are a little confused right now. I don't really seem like the sort of person that's a Willow Smith fan, I know. The other day I was on Rookie and read something about Willow's new song, which sampled one of my favorite Radiohead songs, "Codex." That somehow landed me on Willow's Tumblr (you know how it goes on the Internet; one minute you're doing homework and the next it's three hours later and you're looking at pictures of Will Smith's daughter), and I slowly realized that she's actually really cool. I was never into her song "Whip My Hair," but it's nearly impossible to deny her sartorial expertise, especially when you keep in mind the fact that she is twelve years old. ...I know.

I really admire the fact that she's created a career for herself despite the fact that she could totally live her life just being Will Smith's kid. I mean, she could've waited until she was in high school, at least, but I'm not one to talk. Like, not even a little. I remember how much of a bum I was when I was twelve, so it's equal parts awe-inspiring and jealousy-inducing that she has a really bangin' wardrobe.

It was surprisingly difficult to find good examples of Willow's style on the interwebz, but here are a few photos of her looking her most, well, Willow-ish.

Look at that crop of hair! Yowza!

Can you imagine going to school with Willow Smith? I think I would be that person that makes a lot of Harry Potter references (ie, Whomping Willow) around her.

A pink mohawk and Chanel flats...Yeah, I was nothing like her when I was twelve.

The fam. The whole Smith crew is just a good lookin' bunch.

I can't even fathom how that Avatar-like hairstyle was created.

Nobody sasses Willow Smith. No one. You know why? She's got Swiss cheese leggings.

I can't wait until she gets to high school. That will be a transformation worth watching.

I didn't realize how long it had been since I'd posted a playlist, so since it's Sunday, I thought I'd make one. Willow-themed (in theory), of course.

Don't forget to watch the Inauguration tomorrow! Da Prez is gettin' sworn in!! Can't miss that!

Hufflepuff x Grotto NYFW Launch Party

With only two days left until New York Fashion Week officially begins (as well as Fashion Month as a whole), the entire city is alight with fashion talk, kick-off parties, and lots of models. ...If you can 'alight' something with skinny people. The first of many events I'm going to be attending in the next week or so--that wasn't intended to sound so pretentious, I swear--was last night, the Grotto NYFW Launch Party. I'm still not quite sure why I was invited, but I was über pumped when I was, of course. Firstly because it was a fashion week party, and secondly because Anya from Project Runway was debuting her Spring 2013 collection there. Hell yeah.

I got myself all dolled up for the occasion...only to stand in line in the rain for about forty-five minutes. I got inside eventually--after seeing and briefly conversing with several Project Runway veterans, one of whom invited me to their runway show next week--and stayed for about twenty minutes speaking to a lovely couple from New Zealand. By the time I got inside, Anya's show was over. Mondo bummer. (That was a Project Runway pun right there!) It was at the Norwood Club in Chelsea, which is really just a freaking fancy townhouse with bars on every floor. It was very much intended for adults. And then there was me.

I took some pictures of what I wore once I got home, painfully slipping back into my heels for the photos. Only for you guys. Literally. I would never have done that otherwise. Two syllables: blisters.

Dress: vintage Jones New York via my mom's closet (classiq mama)
Heels: thrifted
Bracelet: a store in Old Town
Watch: gift shop in Giverny
Ring: Venice Beach

I'm wearing the Hufflepuff house colors, black and gold, on purpose. I'm showing my house pride. Don't let anyone tell you Hufflepuffs are lame, because if they do I will come and slap them with my mental bitch-slapping hand. I have a hand that is especially for bitch-slapping because there are too many HuffPuff haters in the world.

Cross-body bag: my great-grandma's with my gold belt attached with safety pins as a strap--classy, I know

Earrings: birthday present from my mom

Those earrings are possibly the most painful things to get in. You have to drag a chain through the piercing in order to wear them properly. Mmmm.

It has a secret slit! I felt like Angelina Jolie all night, really. It goes higher, trust me. I just wanted to keep things PG.

I had a few technical difficulties with my self-timer.

It took several hours, a shiz ton of black nail polish, and a borderline poisonous amount of Absorbine Jr. (or Horse Juice, as I like to call it) to get my nails to look like that. Lola and I tried most of the ones from this post before realizing that splattering your nails with paint can in fact possibly go wrong.

I have one final day before school officially starts. DearGodsaveme. I had an awesome summer though, and hopefully you did, too. Autumn is one of my favorite seasons (because we have so many to choose from), so I'm getting quite excited about it. I am so done with walking around with a perpetual coat of perspiration on my body.

Merry Fashion Week! Let the games begin.

Brits Are Best

Things that are British and therefore (and for other reasons, too) awesome:
1. HARRY POTTER.
2. Doctor Who (I don't watch the show, but I know my friends Lola and Michelle will kill me if I don't include it on this list)
3. The drama teacher at my old school, Joanne.
4. Charlie McDonnell (I just found out about him tonight and he's incredible, if you don't know who he is, you need to watch his videos. I'm not a usual Youtuber, but he's an exception)
5. The Arctic Monkeys
6. Emma Watson
7. Alexa Chung

I love Alexa Chung. I actually modeled my haircut after her hair.
Here are some in-spy-ray-shun-all (inspirational, for those of you who didn't get that) photos:

(All photos via various sources, mostly Harper's Bazaar. If you know where a picture's from, let me know and I'll cite it)

How cute is she???? Pretty kyoot.

If anyone can rock a Chanel bag, it's her. See pictures 2, 3, and 4. The first picture is very Band of Outsiders Spring/Summer 2012, which I love.

I'll get back to a regular posting soon. Jew holidays are quite time consuming. Eating challah takes a lot of energy.

I'm working on a post about a legit topic, written especially because now I write for the Huffington Post. It shall premiere on Tuesday, October 4th, maybe, or before. Haven't quite decided.

Emma³

Emma³=Emma x Emma x Emma If we're being technical, it should be 3Emma, but Emma³ is twenty billion times cooler.

I know I haven't been on top of my blogging game lately, but in my defense, I was plagued with a head cold this weekend and had to do something called "sleep" (? I was unfamiliar as well). I wasn't very good at it. Perhaps it is something where practice makes perfect?

But to make up for my baby hiatus, I have decided to tell you all about the three Emmas that are not only style icons, but are highly inspirational (Emma Watson especially. I am basically in love with her. It's partly to do with the fact that she is Hermione Granger, but she's also a wonderful and spectacular person. Sigh.): Emma Watson, Emma Stone, and Emma Roberts.

All three of the women are young actresses that started off small and have worked their way up to bigger and better things. Over the years, their styles have developed as well, and I'm here to open your eyes to the world of Emmas.

Emma #1: Roberts
To be honest, I don't know much about Emma Roberts, except for the fact that I watched "Unfabulous" religiously as a child. DAY AFTER DAY IT'S UNFABULOUS AND EVERYONE AROUND ME IS UNBEARABLE!

Most people know her from "Unfabulous" or because she's Julia Roberts' niece, but it looks like little Miss Roberts is making a name for herself in the real world. She has graduated from Teen Nick Academy for Bad Acting (TNABA)and now attends the Real World Institute for Talented People (RWITP). Speaking of legit things, she was recently put on Derek Blasberg's list of young rising stars, alongside Zooey Deschanel, Dakota Fanning, Amanda Seyfried and Lea Michele. That's a pretty hot list Derek's got goin' on there, wouldn'tcha say?

I haven't seen Emma in any movies lately, but I've been seeing more and more of her in Harper's Bazaar, so maybe that's a sign telling me to jump on the bandwagon. This girl's making her comeback, and this time she's doing it fabulously. (Pun pun pun pun pun pun pun, Nickelodeon!)

Emma #2: Stone
The world first saw Emma Stone in "Superbad" and loved her, then in "House Bunny," and then her career took off like a sparrow in November. Meaning fast. "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" came next, then "Zombieland" and the one that made Emma Stone a household name: "Easy A." After that movie, she took about a million jobs and came out with "Crazy, Stupid, Love" and "The Help" all at once. The next big one is "The Amazing Spider-Man." Let us note that all of her roles in these movies were leads.

So she's basically one of the beastest women on earth right now. And she's like 22, so she has the whole rest of her life to become a legend.

She's been a blonde, a brunette and a redhead, and looks gorgeous as all three. I don't know anyone like that.

Her style is classic and beautiful, and wears Clavin Klein, Chanel and Christopher Kane. Check dis chick out.

Now that's the Emma I know--a laughing redhead. Like me.

Emma #3: Watson
Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson is secretly a Parisian. Which makes her approximately 83.7 percent classier. The fact that she plays Hermione Granger in all eight Harry Potter movies makes her 104.6 percent cooler. The fact that she is British makes her 74 percent more awesome. The fact that she is playing Sam in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, aka one of my favorite books of all time, makes her 69.2 percent better than everyone else. Her intelligence, talent and beauty add another 256 percent onto that, which leaves us with 587.5 percent Emma Watson.

I'm kind of in love with her, which I mentioned before. Just thought I'd say it again. One of my many lifetime goals is to write her biography. Now that is something worth checking off your bucket list.

Let me tell you a short story. One day, about four years ago, I was walking around Manhattan with my mom and sister, and this teenager/woman comes walking at a brisk pace right by me, and it took me about 20 seconds to process that I was pretty sure that Emma Watson had just walked right by me. It's not confirmed, but it still gives me the heebie jeebies when I think about it.

If you didn't manage to pick up any of the magazines she was featured in this summer, such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar UK, then you can read the articles here: read the full article from Vogue and small excerpts from Harper's Bazaar UK's feature on her.

If you don't see what's so incredible about her, then I don't know what to do to convince you. She was born this way. And she was born to run. From dementors and Death Eaters, that is.

Oh right--the fashion part. She looked adorable at age 12 and stunning at 21, with her Hermione hair and her pixie cut. Her current hairstyle kind of makes her look like Twiggy sometimes; there's a picture below. She's also flat out beautiful. Just look:

She knows how to dress herself in a very unique way; never subdued, but not Lady Gaga-ish either. WHY CAN'T I BE HER, PLEASE EXPLAIN. But seriously, I don't understand the science of it. Anyone wanna help a brotha out?

Emma in Burberry. See what I mean? She's like a good party: not quiet but not too loud. In my opinion.
Emma at the MTV Movie Awards, gorgeous as ever.

In an editorial that I can't seem to pinpoint. Bein' cute, wearing a literally handmade monocle.
I hope you have gathered as much inspiration from these infinitely inspirational women as you possibly can. But hurry, before everyone else snatches it up! JK, that's physically impossible. We all know how much I love making jokes about illogical things just for kix.

In other news...
Wait, that was a totally unintentional but totally perfect transition into what I'm about to say. I now write for the Huffington Post. They were looking for high school bloggers to write for them, so I submitted my work. I now send them blogposts as often as twice a week and they publish it on their site. I'm not sure how I was chosen or who else is doing it, but I'll let you know as soon as I get my grubby little fingers on that info. I'm lying, my fingers are not grubby. They just have blue pen on them because I like to draw smiley faces out of my hand freckles.

Also, the beginnings of my Missoni For Target purchases have arrived! I wore one of the headbands today. I felt very Italian. I think there was even pizza for lunch today at school.

The winner of my shorts giveaway was Daxia from Silk and Satan.

I won't be covering spring clothing and beauty trends until after Paris Fashion Week. Same with street style. If you recall, street style is the first thing I wrote about on this blog. Memories...

I feel like I'm forgetting something, but I hope I'm not.

Oh, but I am.

Last night I saw Newsies!, an off-Broadway show about 1899 newsboys. It was really good, and my mom's student was in it. Plus the lead had some serious pipes. I'm talking Aladdin-style. Since it was out in Jerz-ay, I got home at 12 am and had to get up at 6 am for school. And I had a science test today. I love how these things play out so nicely.

Enjoy your three day school week, I know I am.

Can It Please Be August 3rd

Not only because I'm going to France tomorrow, but because today has literally been the worst day ever. Or, at least the worst one I've had in a while.

I don't care to explain why it was such an awful day by giving all the details, because that would mean that I'd have to relive it, which I NEVER WANT TO DO EVER AGAIN.

Let's just say I got a piece of tissue stuck in my ear, nearly missed my yoga class because I had to go all the way to the upper west side to get it removed, which ended up being quite painful, and then when I went to the gym afterward, I fell off the treadmill. The last part literally happened 23 seconds before I was going to get off anyway, and I guess it was like, "Nope! That's it, you're done. Get off. Now." And I just started tripping a lot and I knew I wasn't going to get back up again so I just let go of the handlebars and let myself slide (painfully) off the fricking machine. I now have a stinging and scraped knee and ankle to prove it. Two guys asked me if I was okay, but I was thinking to myself, "Wow they have no idea how typiqual this is for today." Actually, when I took out my salad to eat while on the subway after my treadmill incident, my mom said to me seriously, "Be careful with that salad, based on how you're day is going. Don't drop it."

Oh, this was all after I'd gone to sleep at 12:30 am and gotten back up at 4 am, only to see that the 3rd Pottermore clue had not been put up yet. I then reset my alarm for 5 am, fell asleep and got back up at 5, and once again, the clue was not up. I reset my alarm for 6, and at 6 am, the clue finally went up. However, in between these times when I actually was awake, I dreamt about doing the Pottermore challenge, so I felt like I'd done it 5 times already, and wasn't sure if I actually had when 6 am came around.

I found the answer to the clue and went to the site and the Quill was in an ad on the sidebar, but instead of just having to click the Magical Quill and being done with it, you had to make it levitate. I couldn't do it, so I ran to the bookshelf and pulled out Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and flipped to the part where they learn the levitation spell. I read the section, and practiced the swish and flick, and muttered, "WinGARdium LeviOsa!" while doing it, then tried it on the Magical Quill, but to no avail. I then went to YouTube and got the movie clip where Hermione reprimands Ron about the emphasis on "leviosa" ("It's LeviOsa, not LevioSAR!"), and tried Hermione's technique again, but I still couldn't get the freaking Quill to levitate. I opened the Pottermorewatch tumblr and people said you just had to swivel your cursor quickly horizontally along the bottom of the ad and after about 50 tries, I finally got it. You are now reading the words of PhoenixQueen31. I am magical. I told you guys I was.

So yeah. There were a few other details in between there, but I'm sure you get the gist here. August 2nd, 2011=ew please stop never again.

On a happy note, though, I got an 8 GB CF (memory) card for my camera today at Adorama for only $19.54, including tax. My camera is now ready for use. I took one picture, and it was of my sweaty gym shorts, and even that was a decent picture. I'm so excited.

I'm off to pack, and try and move as little as possible so I don't get hurt again.

Harry Potter...The Boy Who Lived...Come To Die.

Wow that was one of the many incredibly scripted lines from "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," which I SAW AT MIDNIGHT LAST NIGHT (JULY 14TH) AND IT WAS SO GREAT. I mean, I could go on for hours criticizing everything that they did wrong and what they could've done to make it better, but I won't bore you all with that.

I apologize for not posting yesterday and also for not taking pictures of my outfit that I wore on my 4th day at FIT. It was so hectic--we had so much prep work to do for the premiere. Me and my friend mich had to get our wands (really just me), and then identify them (mine is a 10 3/4 inch holly wand with a unicorn hair core), and get into our costumes, and of course converse for hours about everything Harry Potter, and then we had to get to the theatre (my mom and sister and her friend came as well), and then we got our HP 3D glasses and were so pumped and AHHHHH I'm so overwhelmed I can't even type.

Basically, I forced my mom to drive us to a theatre we'd never been to before because I insisted that we go the 12:01 showing and NOT the 12:11. We just had to.

But because of that, we got good seats, third row, and Mich and I were practically the only ones dressed up in full Hogwarts uniforms. Check us out:

On me:
Sweater: New York & Company
Shirt: my mom's
Tie: Mich's dad
Skirt: IDK bro.

On Mich:
Everything is from her dad or sister
(Except for) Her robes: Madam Malkin's

Who wore it best?

Rachel and her friend Julie bawling over the end of an era.

Blooper shot. Keep in mind these were taken after we watched the movie.

So yeah. Also, these two random guys came up to Mich and I and asked if they could take a picture with us. It was so cool.

I'm about to go watch "A Very Potter Musical" with my sister so gtgbye!!!
